Can We Have A Word With You?

Posted by Foobooz on March 3rd, 2008

Last Wednesday in the Metro we mentioned we loved the concept of gastropubs but hated the word.

So now we’re asking you, the Foobooz audience to suggest a new less icky term.

Best suggestion will win a $25 gift certificate to Cantina Los Caballitos.

Add your suggestion in the comments and be sure to include a valid email address so we can get the gift certificate to you if you win.

In honor of the recently retired leader: Castropub.

      because I heart Cantina… let’s try:
      -restrotavern
      -gourmet-and-guzzle
      -gourmand’s taproom

      Foobar or Fooboozerie?

    5. lonelyJam15 Says:

      Bistropub

    6. Steve Odabashian Says:

I’m not crazy about “I heart” either.

      I would never say I don’t heart “I heart.”

    7. Adam Says:

Restap, short for restapraunt, which sounds like it could be kinda French or Belgian, and you know in Philly we heart–I mean love–anything Belgian.

    8. Aaron Says:

Hey I also love they gastropub concept but I hate the name. How bout “beer n’ burger”?

    9. Matt Says:

      Draftaraunt

      Or BrewCafe

    10. Michael Lignowski Says:

Putting the emphasis where it belongs:

      Buzztro

    11. Scott Dalfonso Says:

      Yuppie Yummies
      Hipster Havens
      OR
      Barstro

    12. Garcon Says:

      Grub-pub

    13. George Says:

      How about Breustro. Brew=beer + Bistro=.
A “u” adds that extra bit of flair.

    14. Sonia Says:

Bar appetit… a bar for the readers of bon appetit magazine (difficult to make food/drinks with exotic ingredients). I guess the plural would be bars appetit!

    15. Ryan Says:

      Foodie Tavern
      or
      Foodie-casual

    16. Pete Says:

      foodbar or foodie bar
(transposing “bar food” puts “food” first without sounding pretentious)

    17. tanglethis Says:

The French have a perfectly good word for this – brasserie.

      Some options:
      3 star bar
      brewbistro
      brew cafe
      tap & table

I actually prefer the implied gastronomist prefix to foodie… the latter always sounds more like an insult than a title one could enjoy.

    18. Bluehensfan Says:

      A dinebar…

    19. GITract Says:

      I like “restropub”

The problem is that a lot of the words have particular connotations, e.g. “brew”-anything implies they brew their own beer, “cafe” is casual, “brasserie” seems more upscale over here than over there. Granted, that all evolves with usage…
