Overrated Octopus?

Posted by Foobooz on December 17th, 2008

Tim McGinnis breaks down where to enjoy octopus all year round but in so doing, he takes a big-time shot at Dmitri’s!

When compiling a list of all things overrated in Philadelphia, Field Guide has Geno’s Steak’s, Hall and Oates and Rocky 2 through 6 all somewhere near the top. But after dining on Dmitri’s (2227 Pine St. 215.985.3680) octopus we’ve decided it beats them all to a pulpo. The “small plate” of drywall tough legs was served up in a fishy, oily sauce by an apathetic slacker staff more interested in reading their art industry magazines than delivering great grub. It made us as disappointed as a kid at Christmas with a stocking full of tube socks.

giant_octopusSo what do you think readers, does Tim have a point?

i have had the octopus be bad and exceptional at dmitri’s, so i had to vote the fitler square option since i’ve never been to that one. now if we were talking about the rest of their food, i would whole-heartedly say that it is over-rated. their mains are typically awful with bland sides and the only good appetizer they’ve ever had were baked dilled oysters.

Their food is wonderful! The octopus and the scallop entree are my favorites!

I like Dimitri’s a lot, but the two dishes people rave about there, the octopus and the spicy chicken thing, I find terribly unexciting.

The octopus is way to oily. It’s much, much better at Estia, where it is incredibly tender and has a great grilled flavor.

Never been to the Fitler Sq location, but only went once to Dmitri’s in Queen Village, and walked out because of their “octopus”. They literally served us squid instead. And not very good, either. When we asked our server what was up, and mentioned the dish was not obviously not octopus because it had no tentacle “suckers” on the pieces, she told us we were flat out wrong.

She pulled our silverware out of the dish and placed it directly on the bare table, removing the “octopus.” Then she became indignant when I reached over to another, empty table nearby to snag some clean silverware, after waiting another 10 minutes for entrees that did not appear.

Then, we left. And never went back.

haven’t been in a couple years, but i have always loved their oily octopi, what can i say. at the fitler sqaure location i liked the fried smelts too but theres only so many smelts a man can eat. i find the story about serving squid and insisting its octopus hard to believe. they serve how many plates of octopus a day and they get their cephalopods confused.

believe it or not. We had actually JUST returned from 10 days in Greece, where we had octopus every day. So I’m pretty sure we got it right, and the “slacker” server did not.
