36 Hours in Philadelphia - New York Times

The New York Times packs a lot of action in its 36 Hours in Philadelphia and they sure don’t skimp on the culinary.

Among the spots mentioned:

  • No lemon meringue pie - Silk City.
  • Odd Couple – Chinese-Peruvian fusion at Chifa.
  • Bowling and Munching – North Bowl.
  • Slice of Local Color – The Italian Market and Lorenzo’s Pizza (9th and Christian version) in particular.
  • What, No Chicken Soup? – Modern Israeli at Zahav.
  • Take a TripUpstairs at Time for absinthe.
  • No Snooze Button – Waiting for a table at Sabrina’s Cafe.

        It should be clarified. The Lorenzo’s in question is the 9th and Christian pizza spot. Not the 3rd and South variety.

      Yeah, of course they missed a lot of great spots. They had 36 freaking hours, not 36 days. I think the spots they hit were a pretty good sampling of Philly flavor and represent the city well.

      Yeah, agreeing with Mr. Goodtimes, aside from the Italian market run through (Lorenzo’s? Seriously? No offense to the Lorenzo’s crowd but pizza just is not good in Philadelphia. I accept this) this actually showed a lot of Philadelphia food that wouldn’t necessarily occur to someone overnightin’ on a biz trip or whatever. Good calls. I kinda question North Bowl’s presence on this list, but seeing Silk City on the list, you can see how the decision was made.

      I’ve always been really disappointed by the pizza in the city itself, especially when there are some decent places in the burbs. Near the Italian Market, I recommend Slice, at 10th and Federal, where the pizza is awesome, no chewy dough or sweetened tomato paste sauce in sight. It’s right across the street from Bitar’s, purveyors of fine Gyros and Falafel, and around the corner from Chickie’s, possibly the city’s best hoagie shop. Sometimes I love my neighbourhood.

      Time? Wtf? how about hmmmmm. well, anywhere else? im going to spend 36 hours in NYC and go to bubba gump and TGIfridays.

      slightly off topic: @ marty: pizza’s just not good in philly? what about la rosa for pizza rustica? or osteria if you want the best pizza margherita this side of the atlantic? sarcone’s has great pizza if you can get there early enough. even gianfranco’s has a respectable slice.

      @mike + me, yes all your examples are OK, but I think it might be one of those “somethings in the water thing” but every pizza I’ve had or been led to in Philly has always had something “off” about it. And believe me, I’m not much of a pizza snob. Doesn’t bother me much as there’s plenty of other foods to replace pizza cravings.
