Tonight, Bars Without TVs

Posted by Foobooz on October 20th, 2009

The Phillies have the night off so why not visit a bar that doesn’t have a TV. They were probably feeling a bit lonely recently. And of course for the non-sports fans, these spots might provide some sanctuary in upcoming weeks.

Here’s a few from our Top 50 Bars list.

Standard Tap recently added a TV just for the Phillies in the playoffs downstairs.

      Otherwise it won’t be on.

Bob and barbara’s also has a tv. I actually think they have two.

Okay, even if some of these have televisions, I love the attempt to put out a list of screen-free bars. I do get tired of places that have multiple televisions flashing — even if I don’t want to watch, my eyes get distracted and I can’t relax. The upstairs bar at Fri Sat Sun is TV-free and very mellow at that.

Yes, Bob & Barbara’s does have two flat screens. It’s been a great place to watch the games because very few people know that. Whoops.

I’m all for TV free bars. But TV free doesn’t always mean conversation friendly. The last time I was at Standard Tap (on a Sunday afternoon) the jukebox was so loud that I was hoarse when I left. Having to shout at someone seated across from you sucks. Asking the bartenders to turn it down was useless. I love the Grey Lodge, but some patrons can’t enjoy their beer without a healthy helping of speed metal. Give it a rest, fellas.
