Starr Going German With Bier Garten

Posted by Foobooz on January 19th, 2010

Phoodie is reporting that Stephen Starr is looking to open a German biergarten in Fishtown. The project is called Bier Garten would run along Frankford Avenue opposite of Johnny Brenda’s and adjacent to the Acropolis Diner.

It will be interesting to see how this develops, especially with Fishtown’s reputation for being fiercely NIMBY.

I’m sick of all this NIMBY crap that Philebrity and its related sites spits out. There has been so many new things that have opened all around Fishtown and on Girard Ave. in the past two to three years that the use of that stupid ass acronym is completely unwarranted. Fishtown didn’t want Sugarhouse, and they didn’t want a guy with a crap track record opening a huge bar under the guise of a music venue. Unless the plans call for leveling a block for parking spaces, I imagine this will go through quite easily.

Typical of Starr. Can’t get an original idea to save his life.

Pretty funny how Starr continues to try and beat Garces to the punch. I know Garces is looking at doing a similar concept and many people tell me that Starr is buying up leases so that GRG wont have a chance at them…

‘Pretty funny how Starr continues to try and beat Garces to the punch.’

Don’t forget Brauhuas Schmitz. Look’s like their success is catching the attention of the two big guns.

Leases or not, I’m not sure filling and running a giant Bier Hall is going to be as easy as Garces and Starr think. Especially in Fishtown.

Figured someone (like Starr) would be jumping on this soon: beer gardens are booming in New York, and you know, it’s gotta be tried in New York first…

Bejayzus, take a frickin’ risk, wouldya?

Pretty funny how NIMBY and so many comments on this topic here and elsewhere don’t understand the difference between a beer garden and beer hall.

brahaus schmitz is an excellent addition but they don’t have a beer garden. neither will garces beer and brats (really a milwaukee thing as far as I can tell). I believe Philadelphia used ot have the country’s largest beer garden over in Brewerytown at some time (pre-prohibition).

Silk City has a beer garden still, right?
