The Bar Graph

Posted by Foobooz on January 26th, 2010

Emily and Brynn, two Penn kids who are trying to hit up as many bars as they can before graduating in May. What makes them different is they’re blogging about it, and even cooler, creating great looking graphics chronicling the journey. We especially love “The Bar Graph,” a display of Philadelphia bars plotted along a Sketchy to Classy axis and a Bad to Awesome axis.

    1. Jon Says:

jesus christ. Only two penn kids would rate Johnny Brenda’s as “Sketchy” . . . try J&J’s Trestle Inn.

    2. felicia Says:

How is ripping off New York magazine’s “Approval Matrix” worthy of notice?

I like the initiative to blog but it’s a blatant steal.

    3. CEF Says:

@ Jon – sadly the Trestle just closed. But for all your sketchy bar needs, may we turn you onto Club Jaguar on Ogontz or Prince’s on Fairmount. And if you need the extra boobage, The Dolphin in South Philly gets a nod.

@ Felicia – imitation is the highest form of flattery? Or something. ;-)

    4. Meg Says:

@CEF – I used to live across the street from the Dolphin and it remains one of the greatest and sketchiest bars I’ve ever experienced. Big love for the Dolphin.

    5. g Says:

Jon- exactly, they are kids. If I was a 21 year old Penn girl Id think the area around JBs was sketchy too.

    6. felicia Says:

So the internets vote for Brynn and Em to visit the Dolphin. It is possible they would evaporate in a puff of smoke once south of Washington Ave, though.

    7. Marty B. Says:

Eh, not going to bash the kids. JB’s after all is only half way down the “sketch” portion of the x axis, which you know might be where someone would kneejerk place “rock club” ambiance.

Still, little room is left to the left of JB’s space to accurately represent even Dirty Franks and McGlinchy’s, let alone The Dolphin.

Would be interesting to see how they’d rate Standard Tap, to see if they’re rating bars in themselves or sketching them on zipcode.

    8. Mark Says:

I think it’s more important to note the fact that phoodie made fun of these retards, and foobooz “loves” that meaningless graph.

    9. Dude Says:

It’s a graph with an x and y axis representing two different variables, and thus they’re “ripping off” NYMag? You might as well say NYMag was ripping off Descartes.

Not to mention the fact that they work a third and fourth variable(neighborhood and cost of a drink) into the graph via the size and color of the dots.

This is a lot more clever than the NYMag approval matrix, which is just a vehicle for snark (and itself ripped off from the Onion AV Club) as opposed to a means of conveying information.

I doubt my assessment of a bar is likely to match up with these girls’ in any way, and so the chart isn’t going to be of much use to me. But the knee-jerk hate, both from phoodie and the commenters here, is lame.

    10. g Says:

Mark- why is what phoodie says of interest at all? Kind of ironic for that site (and the majority of the too cool for school “foodie” commenters) to rip these girls when phoodie is a tragically bad blog. How many posts can the site have about douche-bag bars and how much Tommy Up and PYT are the bee’s knees.

felicia- 99% of these posters would have evaporated in a puff of smoke going below washington avenue 5 years ago.

    11. Josh A Says:

They have to go to Dolphin on a Friday night.

    12. CEF Says:

@ Felicia – agreed, especially during open mic night.

    13. Mike Says:

I can’t believe they haven’t been to the Watusi! It’s practically in their back yard

    14. Bar for the Course Says:

      Dear internets,

We see your Dolphin and raise you one Republican.

      Full of mixed metaphors,
      BFTC
