Heir to Restaurant Row

Posted by Foobooz on January 28th, 2010

Walnut Street’s Restaurant Row might be shrinking but there are other stretches around the city that can now argue they deserve the crown.

South 20th Street: Audrey Clare, D’Angelo’s, Meritage, Snackbar, Tinto, Twenty Manning, Village Whiskey….

South 13th Street: Amis, Barbuzzo, Bindi, El Vez, Lolita, Sampan, Zavnio….

North 2nd Street: Bar Ferdinand, El Camino, Kong, Koo Zee Doo, Standard Tap, Swift Half….

Walnut Street: Alma de Cuba, Le Bec-Fin, Morton’s, Pietro’s, Portico, XIX….

What do you think is Philadelphia’s restaurant row?

forgot Pub and Kitchen on South 20th….most of those are established….N 2nd is still too new, need to establish consistency…

Was just going to mention Pub & Kitchen, too…20th Street is definitely where it’s at!

Less we forget the strip of Chestnut Street between 7th and 8th Streets. Jones, Chifa, Union Trust, Morimoto, and more in the works. This section is definitely a strong contender.

we’ve moved beyond the restaurant row concept. there are good clusters forming all over the place now.

What about the 700 block of Chestnut? Chifa, Jones, Union Trust, Morimoto (an soon to be reopened former Blue Angel, I think).

    • Matt

I’d also go with the 2000 block of Sansom (Village Whiskey, Capogiro, Melograno, Noble, Porcini, Vic, Day by Day) as an option.

Also the easy one: the S 200 block of 18th (Rouge, Devon, Parc, new Steve Starr pizza place, Barclay Prime, Gardenia)

I can’t believe you left out your beloved P&K!

You’ve forgotten South Street: Supper; Percy Street Barbecue; Brauhaus Schmitz; Core di Roma; Gaja Gaja; Las Bugambilias; and these are but a fraction of the restaurants located ON South Street, much less near South St.

“South 20th Street: Audrey Clare, D’Angelo’s, Meritage, Snackbar, Tinto, Twenty Manning, Village Whiskey….”

Aren’t at least three of those living well past their prime?

I’ll take Spruce St, East of Broad, a mini restaurant row:
Vetri, Mercato, Kanella, Tria, Varga, Valanni.

I am torn between 20th Street and Matt’s suggestion of Sansom Street. Not that there’s much of a geographic difference…

Looking at these comments, I have to agree with Andre. We are well beyond a single Restaurant Row. The fact that there are contenders popping up outside of CC–N. 2nd, the unmentioned E. Passyunk, even a pocket in Bella Vista–and that many of these restaurants are more casual than Susanna Foo and La Bec Fin ever were on Walnut St, proves that the food scene here is pretty mature.

      Saul,

      Which three?

    • LadyAdmin

Thank you, Barry G, for mentioning E. Passyunk (my ‘hood)! Le Virtu, Cantina, Fond, Izumi, and north up to Royal Tavern and Cochon.
