Which Logo Do You Prefer?

Posted by Foobooz on February 4th, 2010

xochitl_vs_xochitl

As part of Xochitl’s renovation is a new logo, which do you prefer? The new logo showed at the top or the older logo shown below?

Do you prefer Xochitl's new or old logo?

not only does the first one show you how to pronounce, but the new one looks like the Shogun title.

    2. mike Says:

I’m not really a fan of either one. I like the typeface of the first one (along with the prononciation) but I like the weight of the new one. I think a hybrid of the two woulf work best. Neither one is stellar to me.

    3. Renee Says:

Is it just me or does the X in the new logo look a bit like a swastika?

    4. Erin Says:

The new one would strike people as a Japanese restaurant, versus a Mexican one. That typeface is pretty terrible. At the least old one has some class and, most importantly, pronunciation.

    5. smackdown Says:

I think the new idea definitely comes across more Asian influenced than Mexican

    6. el tuerto Says:

I don’t like either, but the new one is worse. That typeface is awful.

    7. rory Says:

the first one looks like they’re trying to make it clear that xochitl and zahav are owned by the same people via similar typeface. Smart move, considering the amount of press zahav’s gotten. As long as the queso fundido stays, i’ll be back to xochitl on the regular. Thank god it is!

    8. Barry G Says:

Xochitl predates Zahav so if anything it was the other way around. I like the first better, but wish it didn’t have the pronunciation.

In the end, it doesn’t really matter.

    9. Michelle C. Says:

I like the old logo. The new one looks kind of cheap to me.

After a couple margs, it probably won’t matter so much.

    10. rory Says:

oops! by first, i meant the new one. zahav’s gotten the bigger press, so it makes sense for them to re-emphasize xochitl’s connection to the now nationally known spot.

    11. CMF Says:

Change up the old one slightly, perhaps. It looks like it’s sitting in a ribbon shaped like a bow, or a dogbone. Great typeface tho.

a really important thing about a logo is that it has to look good in 2-color and in black-and-white, but also both large and small. this may have to be printed on stationery and on business cards. so the old logo is fine when it’s nice and big (even though there’s a lot of wasted space with those swirly things, and the font is generic), but when you make it small you can’t read it at all.

the top logo, though the typeface looks more arabian than anything else, is a much better choice. it’s really hurting from the pronunciation standpoint though.

    13. Gabrielle Says:

As a logo designer, I can tell you that the old one exudes class, while the new one looks a bit loud and cheap, like a fast-food restaurant. And I totally agree with Mike, YES it’s just like Shogun! And at the same time it’s like a strange calligraphy/blackletter from the Middle Ages. There’s nothing Mexican about it.

    14. Bri Guy Says:

The old one does exude class but it is lost in that see of ribbon. Plus the ribbon looks like it’s trying to take on a specific figural shape. It is distracting! And it creates a void of negative space… Maybe there is some context that I am missing (an homage to Aztec art or culture??)

The new typeface creates an exotic sense of drama. The more I stare at it the more I question what language it is (knowing in the back of my mind). In that sense it is successful, but I agree it is a BIT “loud and cheap”

I think the old logo should have been “renovated”. Focused and more dramatic.
