Plenty of Pliny

Posted by Foobooz on March 2nd, 2010

Pliny-the-YoungerWell there’s never really plenty of Pliny but there the highly sought Russian River Pliny the Younger is showing up around town. This weekend it made its 2010 debut at Capone’s in East Norriton but we’re sure its long gone now.

Tonight the Grey Lodge is tapping a beer that rhymes with “Whiny the Unger.” Yes, the tapping has become such a happening that the Northeast bar has resorted to codewords and a ticketing system. Starting at 5pm they will hand out tickets reserving an 8-ounce pour of the beer geek elixer. The beer will be tapped at 7pm. Figure 76 glasses can be drawn from the sixtel.

On Wednesday, Resurrection Ale House will be pouring a sixtel of Pliny the Younger. The first twenty Resurrection email list members who replied will get the opportunity to come in at 11:30 am to enjoy the beer in relative peace. At noon the doors open to the general beer geek population and chaos is sure to ensue. Especially with Ommegang Chocolate Indulgence, Pliny the Elder, and Lagunitas Hop Stoopid also on tap.

Memphis Taproom will be offering up a similar deal on Friday, March 5th, pouring their sixtel first to email list members and then opening the doors to the rest of the beer crazed world.

Pliny will be tapped at both Tria locations on Saturday, March 13th at noon. No tickets or other tricks to get a chance at the beer there. Just arrive early.

On the 20th you can get your Pliny the Younger at TJ’s in Paoli. Orders are taken at 2pm, the sixtel will be tapped at 4pm.

That makes seven sixtels accounted for, there’s an estimated 10 in the Philadelphia area. But where and when will we find the others?

Monks and Theresas Next Door have already tapped. Is that 9?

who’s got number 10??? bishops collar? belgian? those are my guesses as the other have been spread throughout the region. maybe SPTR….maybe sidecars new place will open with one/.

    • ENOC – Don Tanblock

Its bloggers like this who feel the need to spread the word that causes these events to be the overcrowded messes they have become. When a bar sends out news via their mailing list, they feel they are getting it to the customers who desire the beers the most. When a blog picks up on it, you get the “Me too, cause its hip and trendy” crowd wanting to hop on board.

BTW – there were 13-15 shipped to this area.

way to be a debbie downer Don….

ENOC is correct, about 15 were sent. Sidecar and Blue Dog have one each.

Thanks for fucking up my good time at the Grey Lodge, Art.

Maybe by the time the 15th sixtel is tapped the ‘hype’ will die down a bit and I’ll get to try a glass for this year. I’m tired of doing the 5 deep at the bar at 11am thing. I wasn’t there but I heard yesterday’s event at Monks was a shitshow.

the younger is an extremely tasty beer, i’ve been lucky enough to belly up to the bar at Russian River a few times. The downside…after a few plinys, spending $27 on a bottle of Temptation seems rational. For those that haven’t tried Temptation, its a really amazing, complex beer aged in chardonnay barrels.

Apparently there was quite the shitshow at Russian River itself, the day they released it. 4 growler maximum (too many), some people who waited in line didn’t get any before it was all gone. Check it out on RR’s website.

I’m not telling where that last sixtel is, alls I’m saying is we do plan on hosting another (as-close-as-we-can-get-to) an ALL Russian River line up at Local 44 on the last day of PBW. Construe what you will. Leigh@L44

Sidecar on Fri. 3/12. It’s on their website, so I don’t necessarily consider this to be unfair publication.

    • Ryan

Hey Local 44, Will a current release of PtY still even be fresh by then? Even Vinnie himself says the beer is at its peak for only 2 months.

    • Jay

What kind of jobs do you people have? I would love to go to the bar at 11:30am on Wednesday, but unfortunately I have to work.

Seriously, do post away… I’d love to know. Obviously I’m in the wrong field.

A couple of other people pointed out the freshness issue with the Pliny the Younger, and honestly, it’s a very good point. If we’re truly concerned with better beer and beer at it’s highest quality, we should be putting the freshness above the gimmick we have planned. There’s currently a bit of a hubub about whether it’s even allowed to be sold in PA. Once that works itself out, we’ll get it on tap at Local 44. We’ll do our Russian River day without it. Good looking out. Leigh
