Starr Again Shines on Broad Street Diner

Broad Street Diner

Philly Mag has the scoop this afternoon that Stephen Starr has signed an agreement of sale for the Broad Street Diner. Starr was first interested in the property a year ago when Greek Diner was the rumored concept but “environmental concerns” kept him from following through. Now the price has come down and the environmental issues are being downplayed. The concept is up in the air and Restaurant Club is taking suggestions.

      I hope he doesn’t do a restaurant club, Silk City already has that niche.

      @ Dan – I suppose, but then again, South Philly lacks any kind of restaurant/venue like Johnny Brenda’s or Silk City. It would all depend on the direction he took it, but the Starr brand would probably bring in a different crowd than Silk does by default (which is younger, more hipster).

      let’s see…that’s reasonably close to the new Paesano’s which joined a nearly saturated sandwich market, so I’m guessing either that or he’ll “bring classic french fare” to the italian market, nevermind bibou.

      I don’t care what it is as long as it’s open LATE! I just moved to this neighborhood and the only post-bar dining available is crown friend chicken, 7-11, and pats and genos. Yuck!

      Also, i would love a Silk City clone down on this way. I hate cabbing it out there to silk or JBs or barbary whenever i want to dance.

      I think it is going to be Starr’s Johnny Brenda’s. And honestly, I’m ok with it. There is NOTHING like Johnny Brenda’s in South Philly.

      with a diner like that, it needs to embrace the diner aspect, but with booze too.

      late night is key also, Philly lacks a good diner scene.

      that big parking lot out front is just begging for outdoor dining

      the risk though is the concept or menu prices not being conducive to regular visits.

      I think he’s going to make it a greek diner, but with the cusine on the lines of Anthos or Kefi in NYC and Komi in D.C.. Greek has been a big trend the past two years elsewhere so it’s time for Starr to bring it to Philly, using the building for a cliched “Greek Diner” but with authentic greek dishes and drinks with a hipster vibe.

      Rory, if the Broad St. Diner was north of Washington you might have something with the Italian market triangulation; but the real food “neighborhood” he’s in is Devil’s Den, the cluster of southeast asian restaurants along and around Washington, a couple of small hoagie joints, and you got the Pappa John’s and Chinese/American restaurants up on Broad too. It’s far enough from the developing foodie row on Passyunk to not really be in dialogue with them too.

      If Starr was being “imaginative” in Starr fashion I see 3 possibilities:

      1.) It’s supposedly off the table now, but he’s “cloned” before (i.e. The Continental), so perhaps he’ll do a quick superficial makeover of the Diner shell and bring an “El Rey Sur” to S. Philly. If this were married to say a “Federal Reprieve” (transplanted Ranstead Room), while the Mexican place would be an affront to the actual Mexican restaurants that start popping up like two blocks away, this area does need a good _cocktail_ bar (realistically I know a quality cocktail bar isn’t exactly sustainable in this neighborhood yet, but a Starr venture could thrive on Broad Street traffic tween the stadiums and center city, and the locals who need to walk to James before they start finding things interesting.

      2.) “High end diner with RR’s cocktail consultant again” inspired by Hopper’s “Nighthawks” painting. That would be kinda a cool, if the cocktails were more RR than Continental.

      3.) Opposite demographic of 2.), but plays off Starr’s latest penchant for ripping off things that have been done to death. Make the diner a giant cheesesteak counter, figuring he could siphon off Pat’s and Geno’s post-game traffic.

      true, but I take the subway stop right there in order to walk over to Paesano’s and those others, so that’s why I thought of them. I do agree a quality cocktail bar would be nice, but that’s not the building/space for it.

      Shoulda said it’d be Starr’s way of “introducing authentic pho and upscale ramen” to Philadelphia.

      Actually, now I’m scared that’s exactly what he’s going to do. $10 pho.

      It would be frankly stupid for Starr to do something that’s already here in South Philly (gastropub, Mexican, or pho) – then again, it IS Starr, and he usually does what he wants (not hatin’, just sayin’).

      Moderately priced Asian or Latin fusion and keeping some of the aesthetics of the diner with an outdoor patio would be rad. I think he could have a cash cow if he went the music venue/club route, too – South Philly completely lacks that.

      Rory, you’d save yourself a bit of a hike if you got off Broad at South. You know, when I started making my comment, I was going to make some gibe among my options about Starr “introducing” Pho to South Philly; but I blanked out halfway through writing some pulled out that Knighthawks concept lounge. I still think a nice cocktail spot could work there, if he followed the Nighthawks concept. Seriously think it could work. Cocktail and coffee bar maybe.

      I’d take an upscale Ramen place. Let Morimoto develop the menu. There is barely anywhere to get Ramen in this town.

      A version of the Continental would definitely work but I’m not sure who the clientele would be. The immediate neighborhood isn’t Yuppie enough I don’t think. It would work on E Passyunk.

      Whatever he does, I hope he gets rid of that ugly surface parking lot.

      Christian is equidistant from south and ellsworth pretty much and sometimes at the last minute, i decide to go for bebe’s instead of paesano’s…:)

      There is a liquor application posted in the window now. It says “Chelsea Morning Partners.” I gooogled it but came up short.

      All you need to know abt the Morimoto/Starr relationship is that Starr is not involved in Morimoto Napa.

      LIP is right about Morimoto’s favorite target of drunken rage. But then again, a great majority of the people who have ever worked for or still do work for the man feel the same way. It’s not a joke.

Thus your own hand is playing into “Starrs stranglehold on Philadelphia’s media ecology” or whatever community college urban space studies lingo whets your irrational axe with pseudo legitimacy.

      I am afraid I agree with Wille, despite Marty B’s aggresive tone. Starr is a not a nice person and is at best a media sensation, riding on the coat-tails of a nation wide cultural surge … he got lucky with timing. His food is okay, his prices astronomical and the gravity of his empire makes it difficult for new, truly innovative restaurant concepts to emerge in the Philadelphia Market.
      Marty B. must get a paycheck from Starr.
      Everyone else has to sacrifice their paycheck to his altar if you want to eat out in Philadelphia.
      Diner concept, late night cocktails …. it doesn’t matter. It will be cookie cutter and expensive. It is a shame this is the best we can hope for.

      92 openings listed since June, with only two or three being associated with Starr???

      And I’m not saying that the food is good, or that the prices are reasonable, or the wait staff is polite or the places are cool to be in. The opposite, I don’t like the food, think the wait staff are arrogant and everything over priced. But I think the hyperbole that Stephen Starr is killing the city culinarily is over blown. There are are so many other places, just don’t go. It’s like Howard Stern, just change the channel.
