We’re Getting Younger, But How Much?

It’s Pliny the Younger season again. The once-a-year triple IPA from Russian River makes beer geeks totally lose their freaking minds. The limited run beer is only shipped to select markets (Philadelphia is the only location east of the Mississippi to receive it). Last night it was tapped and kicked in no time at TJ’s in Paoli. Last year there were only 10 or so sixtels delivered to Philadelphia and each of them created its own spectacle.

Tickets are on sale now for Sunday’s tapping at the Khyber Pass Pub. Each ticket is $15, the profits of which go to The Free Library Of Philadelphia Foundation.

Monday has the Younger and seven other Russian River beers on tap at Monk’s Cafe. Younger will be tapped at 11:20am and sold for $15 per glass. All the proceeds all go to Alex’s Lemonade Stand.

We’ll update this post as we learn of more Pliny the Younger tappings.

Update: St. Stephen’s Green is tapping their Pliny the Younger at noon today (Friday March 4th). Look for the Sidecar Bar & Grille to tap their keg next Friday during their weekend of IPA’s Greatest Hits.

Update 2: Saturday, March 5th will see Devil’s Den tapping their keg at 11am.

Update 3: Resurrection Ale House will tap their Younger along with the Elder and Sanctification and Redemption on Tuesday, March 15th. First 50 who replied to Resurrection’s newsletter will get in at 11am. Doors open to the public at noon.

Update 4: The Drafting Room in Exton pre-sold tickets for their HopFest this Saturday. That’s 8 kegs accounted for.

      I really respect these bars for giving the money to charities. Instead of taking financial advantage of the hysteria surrounding this beer (which they could easily do), they have decided to turn this into something special. They deserve lots of credit for doing this. It’s a great day for the Philadelphia craft beer scene.

      Barryg….your point? We’ve got a geeky, passionate, and unpretentious beer and food scene in Philly. Can’t say that about our neighbors up north anymore. i think it’s pretty rad!

      And PTF, I wish more bars would cash in on PtY for fundraisers, too! I’m willing to pay $15 for an ultra rare beer that goes to a good cause.

      Just musing; I make fun of New Yorkers for waiting in line for cupcakes and, in fact, ramen. The Philly scene is refreshingly unpretentious and mostly immune from groupthink and hype-over-substance trendiness, I hope that doesn’t change.

      Ticketing events where demand outstrips supply is just smart and the charity thing is brilliant, I’m glad the bars are wising up. Khyber popup should have been reservations only.

      I am not sad this was on a ticketing system. I would like to try it and so would 2 of my friends, so I got us tickets today. I won’t have to line up anywhere at the crack of dawn, the money goes to charity, I am guaranteed to get a glass and I will (hopefully) enjoy it.

      I know you’re musing, Barry, but for a person who works during the week and can’t make it to weekday 11:30 tappings and the like, this is perfect! And I don’t have to give up my Sunday standing in line by the Khyber. I will waste my time standing in the Sunday lines at Trader Joe’s instead, I’m sure. ;)

      I don’t think group-think has reached here yet, Barry. NYer’s will line up for just about anything. A pop-up of a concept that has been long talked-about and the tapping of a beer that will definitely kick in no time are some good reasons to get in line (or buy a ticket).

      You can say we’ve reached NY heights of foodie hype when we start live blogging food trucks. Oh, uh, ahem…. ;)

      This is a good thing for those that haven’t tried this beer yet. It is such a pain in the ass to get one of these when a bar actually has Younger available. I tried it last year at Sidecar and while I am glad to have had a chance to taste it I hardly think it is worth the insane hype that it gets.

      1) everyone needs to get over the Khyber-Kaya bullshit. i got shut out too, but knew it wasn’t a sure thing. they should have done reservations, but it is what it is.

      2) Pliny The Younger is so 2010.
