Et tu, Amoroso? Layoff Notices Go Out For Philly Drivers

Posted by Jason Sheehan on April 19th, 2011

Okay, so we get it. Times are friggin’ tough. But first it was the news last week that Tasty Baking Company had been bought (and thereby saved) by Georgia-based Flowers Foods. And now today, word is just getting out that Amoroso’s has given 60-day layoff notices to all the drivers at its Southwest Philadelphia bakery. According to the Inquirer, there is also now a very real fear that Amoroso’s may also be looking to close the bakery at 55th and Baltimore completely, which would move all production out of Philly and into New Jersey.

can’t understand the love for amoroso, they are middle of the road in quality. it’s kind of like a minimum standard not best in class

Won’t this make them owner-operators, like Tastykake drivers? Is that a bad thing or good thing? Serious question.

@Cheltenham Charlie: Yes, it seems like the deal they’re being offered will make them something like owner-operators. But since it’s still early and Amoroso’s isn’t giving details on the deals they’re trying to cut, I don’t think anyone on the outside can say whether this will turn out to be good or bad–either for the drivers or the company.

      well my hibby is a driver…the deal her is offering…is like a mofia deal…HIS Financing company,,,HIS leasing company….HE gets ALL monies..and then cuts you a check…these guys work 6 nights a week now..12 hours a night….so they’ll pay 100 grand to work 7 NIGHTS a week!
Believe me….it’s no deal..he will charge 8% on any monies out on the street…so if you have a custtomer who pays you monthly…amoroso will charge the OWNER 8% a week! It’s like a mofia deal I swear!
And he let these drivers pick vacation weeks…PAY for trips and house rentals…and noe they are screwed…would you trust him?
