Raw At The Piazza: I Guess You Could Call It Official

Just in case there are any doubters out there about Raw Sushi & Sake Lounge taking over the Speck space at the Piazza. There sure are plenty of haters.

UPDATE: Phoodie says an early June opening.

      Was really hoping James would relocate here.

      I used to go to all the restaurants there but since Pathmark opened, I do all my cooking at home!!!

      Yeah well its that liquor license which Bart uses to blackmail people. I honestly don’t thing there are ‘haters’ out there, nobody has such strong feelings about RAW. Pointing out obvious flaws and speaking truth to power is not being a hater.

      Meh. I wish something more along the lines of koo zee doo, sonata or il cantuccio would open (whether it be another small byob, or a place with more tables and a bar): we need more quality restaurants like those in the ‘hood. We already have hikari, koi and ken shin for sushi.

      I’ve now turned the corner. After sticking up for the grand idea that was The Piazza for a couple years, I’ve bowed down to all my friends who told me it was a cancer for the neighborhood. There’s so much potential here and this Blatstien idiot keeps screwing things up.

      It seems to be more about him and what he wants there for his own gain as opposed to what the long time residents are interested in. Ultimately, he’s trying to fill condos / apartments. He needs to write up a pretty four page brochure to send out to people moving to Philly from all over the area (country) and promote his building as the go to residence. “Hey, we even have a fancy sushi place! Everyone loves sushi, right!”

      I dunno, maybe he makes out better filling residential units as opposed to retail spaces. No matter how successful a restaurant or retail space is at The Piazza it might not be the best for his bottom line. I bet if we could speak more highly of the Piazza to our friends and families there would be an exponentially larger interest in people living there though.

      Right now, there’s absolutely no reason for me to go there. An additional sushi place in the area is not a reason. Don’t you understand Bart, we WANT a reason to go to The Piazza! We WANT you to fill in your ground floors with amazing retails and eateries!

      I think the Shola place would have imploded one way or another.

      He keeps bringing in inexperienced restauranteurs (Shola included). Tony Rim is not different until he proves he can operate more than place–the verdict is still out until we see the Corner turns out.

      I don’t think it’s a coincidence there is no credible retail and no credible restauranteurs/restaurant groups in the Piazza. Something keeps people who know anything far away.

      I’m so excited to check out Raw! Their Midtown Village location is one of my favorite restaurants in the city. As for Koi and Hikari…Meh. The atmosphere at both is terrible. Hikari is always empty and dead silent. The waitress/hostess is super sweet, but the whole meal feels rushed and totally awkward because it’s usually just our table and the waitress watching us from one corner and the sushi chef watching from the other…in a very bright silent room. Koi is okay, but the atmosphere is off a bit and the sushi cuts are not always the best, that along with the fact that the place it always dusty (see blown glass in the cubby hole type shelves next to the tables…all covered in dust). Raw is greatly appreciated!!!
