Spreading the Love at Opa

Posted by Foobooz on May 11th, 2011

Brian Freedman says Opa is one more reason to head to the 13th Street corridor, the pikelia platter setting the tone right from the start.

[W]hat you get at Opa is a trio of dips that rise above the vaguely depressing status quo: The hummus burnishes a darker shade of tan from the hefty addition of smoked paprika; the tzatzaki is mouth-watering, healthy-tasting; the tirokafteri soft and sensual, the feta base exploding with the bright heat and vivid color of red Italian frying peppers. This is as successful and as understated an opening salvo as any Greek restaurant’s in the city right now.

Agree on the quality of the dips but Opa needs to start grilling their pita. Last two times i was there the pita was cold. Go to Dmitri’s and get to know that great grilled pita.

And this simple comment, corraborated by the evidence of ungilled pita in the photo above, demonstrates the sorry, sorry state of restaurant reviewing in this town. It’s a layup that the pita should be grilled, yet our man blows his wad over a dish with a flaw that an average diner could pick out.

      Sad, really sad.

Freedman always came across as a bit of a hack to me, especially with reviewing obscure ethnic restaurants without comparing them to anything.

But why extrapolate one alt-weekly reviewer for the whole town? Laban or Erace would have noted a lack of grilled pita for sure.

@sixerssoup – the 2 times ive been its been served hot and was grilled. I will say it didn’t have burnt grill marks (much like the above photo) but was delicious. Barryg how is greek food obscure?

Suzy, I was referring to his reviews of New Phnom Penh and Kaffa Crossing. In both he came off a someone who never had the cuisine before and so his opinion was basically worthless.
