Vendy Awards Coming to Philly

Tickets are now on sale for the Philadelphia Vendy Awards, a competition to crown Philadelphia’s best street vendor. The cook-off will be held on July 9th from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Piazza at Schmidt’s and will benefit the Food Trust.

Nominations for the Vendy Awards are now being accepted and the awards are open to any anyone who sells food in the streets, sidewalks or public spaces, anywhere in Philadelphia, not just twittering trucks, though we’re sure they’ll be well represented.

      I wonder who’s going to win the best Organic free range road kill award.

      Boo, I’ve always wanted to go to this in NYC. Now it comes here and I have a Phillies tailgate/game that day.

      Something tells me this will be an elitist event excluding all the hotdog, cheesesteak and fruit salad slanging cart hobbits of center city.

      the nyc one was so much fun last year. can’t wait for this one!

      There are good and bad of the Center City trucks as well. I’m sure that this event will only include the gourmet food trucks but notably, the hot dog vendor on the southwestern corner of 17th and Market grills her dogs and sausages. No dirty water dogs there, and they are delicious.

      The Vendys in NYC, and now in Philly, is an event organized by the street vendor project–an organization that is dedicated to supporting street vendors of all forms–not just food and not just fancy trucks. One things that makes the event in NYC such a great time is the inclusion of vendors that are under the radar–i don’t think they will include center city fruit vendors, but I woudn’t be surprised to see an old school UC chinese food truck or Cneter City falafal vendor–see you there!
