The Vendy Awards took place Saturday at the Piazza at Schmidts with eight finalists serving the 500 attendees and vying for three awards including Philadelphia’s first Vendy Cup.

The Winners were:

BEST DESSERT: Sweet Box

PEOPLE’S CHOICE: Cucina Zapata

VENDY CUP WINNER: Gigi and Big R Caribbean/American Soul Food

      I was gonna go. The lines were obnoxious. 20 minute wait to try each truck? No thank you.

      $55 for all-you-can-drink pounder cans? No Honest Tom’s? No Dapper Dog? No Falafel Nazi? … No thanks.

      I only had 2 long lines out of the 8 (tried all 8 before 6 pm, got there around 3:15), had seconds of multiple trucks, and got a nice buzz off the beer. the real lesson is to tell the trucks not to make “sampler plates” because those trucks had the worst lines.

      As for “no honest tom’s, etc.” well, I made my beef about the selection process known earlier. but it was a fun event. woulda been even better had it not been blazing hot.

      This was one of the worst food events Ive ever gone to. Ive gone to many of these types of events over the years, and am generally easily impressed. There were tons of issues here, both with content and logistics.

      1) Im a vegetarian, and there was little options for me with out a discounted ticket.

      2) I paid $58 to wait in line for an hour for something I could have paid $4, since there were only 2 trucks from which I could eat.

      3) All you can drink- 1 bar for hundreds of people, and only beer available for most of the time? And, I dont drink beer.

      4) Each truck was prepairing the food as it was ordered, and all were full size. The other people I was there with were full after 2 trucks, food was wasted everywhere, because no one wants to each 8 full size portions on a 100 degree day.

      Awful, and I was there was someone to talk to about getting some $$ back.

      Michelle- practically all of the venders had veggie friendly options, I am confused by your comment.

      La Copine has a veggie sandwich, hashbrowns, and quinoa salad. Guapos tacos served fish, but I guess that only helps if you are a pescatarian. King of Falafel was completely veg friendly. Gigis and Big Rs could have given you yams, green beans, cabbage, and mac & cheese. Plus the 2 dessert trucks shouldn’t have given you a problem.

      That really only leaves Cucina Zapata (and Guapos Tacos if you do not eat fish) as non-options for you.
