A Foobooz Pop-Up That’ll Be One For The History Books

Posted by Jason Sheehan on September 13th, 2011

So you’ve all been watching our competition to pick Philly’s signature cocktail, right? Yeah, we know you have. And now that we’re coming down to the wire on the contest deadline (it’s tomorrow at 5pm) and have gotten more than 50 solid recipes from seasoned pros, award-winning drink-slingers, well-meaning amateurs and a few righteous and proud Philly drunks, it is time to test the best of the bunch and get down to the business of picking Philadelphia’s official cocktail.

Which we’re going to do by throwing a party (of course), having a lot of drinks (of course), and pitting these cocktails against each other in head-to-head competition.

That’s right: It’s Thunderdome time, boys and girls, and guess what? Some of you are going to get to come and play along.

On September 20, Foobooz is going to be doing a pop-up at Cook–a one-night-only event which will bring together the creators of the best Philly cocktails and a (very) few of our most dedicated, booze-loving readers who, together, will decide the future of drinking in Philadelphia. This is the night that Love City’s official drink will be chosen. This is the night that history will be made. And if you want to be a part of that action (and why wouldn’t you?), what you need to do is go RIGHT NOW to the Cook website where we have just posted information about this class. Get there, register for your tickets, and do it quick because there are only 16 spots available for this event and they’re going to go fast.

So what are you waiting for? Not only is this going to be a lot of fun (because frankly, putting this many dedicated boozers and restaurant world pros together in one room can’t be anything but fun), but there’ll be food and drinks, a chance to hang out with some of the city’s best bartenders and the opportunity to see me getting totally weird on water ice, Root and Bluecoat gin. Plus, in years to come, when people ask where you were when Philadelphia’s official cocktail was chosen, you’ll be able to say you were there–in the room–when the decision was made.

And while I’d like to say that you can’t put a price on that kind of thing, apparently, we can. It’s $65 per person, all inclusive.

I’ll see the fastest 16 of you there.

Wow, I really hope all this grandiose writing is tongue in cheek. Getting drunk with pretentious folk is a recipe for a headache!

everyone say it with me: i miss the old foobooz.

@Rory – I second that! Its become a shell of its former self. Limit all posts to 100 words or less… Anymore cares more than that

LOL–apparently they’re not going to go THAT fast!

Headline and first paragraph convey no information. most people will not read farther in. I just like the comments on here, I don’t need an exercise in reading comprehension.

They can’t even fill that tiny little space with the individuals who submitted those recipes, sad.

Although I agree wholeheartedly with Rory and Barryg, I think this contest is a great idea. The only thing it really needs is a different name. Instead of a contest for the Philadelphian cocktail, it should reflect PhillyMag’s readership and christen the Main Line.

If the pertinent info was summarized anywhere in the post it would be sold out, nobody knows wtf this essay is about except the handful of us who waste too much on this blog.

For the cocktail entry I call this the Philadelphian (Ben’s Balls if you want to go the obnoxious route) 1 oz Snap, 3/4 oz Cinzano white vermouth, 1/2 oz Canton Ginger liquor, 1/2 oz Ramazzotti Amaro, 2-3 dashes of Regans orange bitters. A Philadelphia centric liquor (snap) a little Italian, Asian (the ginger even though it is a french liquor) and an all liquor cocktail for a hard drinking town Enjoy, I hope it does well.
