Celebrate Mexican Independence at Johnny Brenda’s

You might guess with this headline that Celebrate Mexican Independence is an Indie band coming to the Fishtown bar and music venue but no, Johnny Brenda’s is truly getting into Mexican Independence tonight.

Rather than summarize the whats and whys and potentially butcher Mexican history, we’ll just post the press release.

“El Grito” at Johnny Brenda’s
**Mexican Independence Day**

This Thursday, September 15th
5pm-10pm

The Grito de Dolores (Cry of Dolores) also known as El Grito de la Independencia (Cry of Independence),uttered from the small town of Dolores, near Guanajuato on September 16, 1810 is the event that marks the beginning of the Mexican War of Independence.

This Thursday, we celebrate Mexican Independence Day at Johnny Brenda’s! We are doing this in honor of one of our employees, Maximino Sandoval, who hails from San Mateo in the state of Puebla, where General Ignacio Zaragoza Seguín led the Mexican Army to victory over the French in 1862.

The menu will feature the special dish, Guarache Azteca, using a blue cornmeal that is made from a heritage blue corn that is unique to the San Mateo area. It is being cultivated and brought to our region as part of a fair trade food initiative called Blue Corn Alianza that has been developed by former residents of San Mateo to create a direct link between the economies of their birthplace and their adopted homeland. Max is the president of this alliance and we hope that you will celebrate his endeavor with us!

Menu for “El Grito”

Max has designed some special additions to our food menu for this day including:

Posole – Soup with pork, chicken, hominy, lettuce, radishes, and tortilla chips.

Guarache Aztecha – Blue Corn Tortillas with beans, Flank steak, lettuce, queso fresco, and salsa.

Chile en Nogada – Poblano Chile stuffed with carne molida (chile seasoned ground beef), apple, pear, and peach in a walnut cream. This dish is white, red, and green like the Mexican flag.

**Margaritas will be on the menu too!
