Philly Diner Closed

Posted by Foobooz on October 17th, 2011

Much to the shock of the Under the Button blog, Philly Diner has closed its doors at 39th and Walnut. The formerly late-night diner (it ceased being 24-hours a day after a 2009 shooting) has closed after its lease was not renewed.

University of Pennsylvania students are quoted as being “devastated” over the closing in a Daily Pennsylvanian article, though one commenter refers to the diner as a “cesspool.”

UPDATE: Under the Button follows up that the diner’s contents will be available via an online auction.

The place was a “cesspool”, but the pumpkin spice pancakes were actually very good. Hope something good goes in there. Marathon is still vacant as well I believe.

Too bad for the Penn State students.

Kinda sad. I had some fond memories of going there at with friends at 2AM. But that was back when I went to Drexel and it was roughly where Capogiro is now.

Philly Diner’s menu may have had some bright spots, but everything I happened to order in my 10 or so trips there was downright awful. My most vivid memory is of a chef’s salad with ham that looked like one of Gary Larson’s drawings of an internal organ. Even before all the competing late night stuff opened up you were better off going to Wawa and eating in someone’s house/dorm room.
