New Belgium Coming to Brussels on the Schuylkill?

Jack Curtin caught this news yesterday from Craft Business Daily. New Belgium Brewing out of Fort Collins, Colorado is looking for an East Coast brewery to facilitate its eastern expansion. According to the note in CBD, the third largest craft brewer in the United States is between Asheville, North Carolina and Philadelphia. A decision is expected in early 2012.

Update: via Jack Curtin, The Coloradoan updates the story with why Philadelphia is on the short list.

Philadelphia made the cut based on its ideal position along the coast for distribution, said Simpson, who noted it would be a good fit because there are some world-class Belgium beer bars in Philadelphia.

      this would be a major coup. The city and state need to be working overtime to make sure it happens.

      NC General Assembly ok’d an amendment that would allow breweries to sell product on site.

      As far as I know, Philadelphia has rules that limit what you can do at the brewing site (Yard’s brews and sells, Triumph brews and has food; neither has all three).

      Come on City Council, let’s update our liquor laws to the 20th century at least!

      JTA, I’m confused. You can clearly buy food and take-out booze and both Yards and Triumph. Unless that was an illegal grilled cheese I ate at Yards once.

      I’ll admit to not being to Yard’s in a while, so I was unaware of the food. There’s nothing on their website about food, just the tasting room for beer. And there are no menu’s to be found anywhere else on the net. But my google-fu maybe weak, and I’d accept anyone pointing it out for me.

      And since Triumph doesn’t bottle their beer and don’t have growlers to go, I wonder how you would get beer to go?

      I’ll admit, I only know that the New Hope Triumph sells growlers; not sure about the Philly location. But it’s a pity Yard’s doesn’t mention food on their website, because it’s actually good. Also, Dock Street is a brewery and eatery that sells kegs, bottles, and growlers. So there’s certainly no law resticting such a business in Philly.

      I’m voting for the former train shed at Broad and Washington.

      @mark, almost certainly they would be up in Kensington or Fishtown, near I-95, where large parcels are zoned appropriately, much cheaper than Broad & Washington, and less issues with the neighbors.
