Tiki and Beer Coming to 6th and Spring Garden

While we were away from our computers last week news broke that the team behind Farmers’ Cabinet is taking over the former bank building at 600 Spring Garden and transferring it into a beer hall and tiki bar. The building has recently housed Transit and 90 Degrees, and to another generation of club goers was best known as The Bank, a nightclub run by Stephen Starr. It was built as the Northern Savings Fund Society Building in 1871-72 by noted Philadelphia architect, Frank Furness.

The as yet unnamed project would turn the main floor into an beer hall. The basement would be converted into a windowless tiki bar with a drink menu designed by cocktail whizzes Phoebe Esmon and Christian Gaal. Pan-Asian flavors would supplement the tiki drinks downstairs while upstairs Southern barbecue would be the cuisine.

According to Michael Klein the third floor will also be utilized as a brewery/distiller. A pretty interesting intention as we still await Farmers’ Cabinet to begin brewing on site and the difficulties in starting a distillery in Pennsylvania.

The project is aiming for a spring opening, later for the third floor.

      All of the news breaks from Michael Klein or Meal Ticket. Only reason to visit Foobooz is the comments, not sure why no one comments on Meal Ticket.

      So does this mean the Farmers Cabinet team is going to skip out on that place in the middle of the night just like they did at Fork & Barrel in East Falls when word broke they were opening FC? (I am thinking of the right crew, right?)

      Emily, yes it’s the same crew. I’m not sure how they convinced the new landlord with their recent history that this is a good idea for this spot. This might last as long as Raw at the Piazza but i might be wrong.

      @Barryg:

      No one comments on Meal Ticket because of the annoying requirement to create an account before doing so. Same reason Grub Street and most other Philly food blogs see such low discussion rates. I can’t understand why these idiots don’t pick up on this fact.

      Wow. Can we get over the “Fork and Barrel” ordeal already? I’ve been to The Farmer’s Cabinet and have seen the same bartenders and managers from Fork and Barrel working there. how bad could it have been?

      Seems like a strange space to to open a traditional bar/restaurant. It’s an enormous space that for as long as I’ve been in Philadelphia has been some type of dance club. And the location isn’t bad but you’ll need to make it a real destination spot since there isn’t a lot of foot traffic. Time will tell.

      This is very interesting, as a resident of spring garden i would love it, but feel like its not going to happen ,been to farmers cabinet and fork and barrel, nice but seemed like the just took concepts on tv and from bars in NYC and rip them off, curious to see how many ideas from brooklyn they steal and bring down to philly. These guys must be from New York or something. Wish we had some real Philadelphians doing something. Plus i Heard stories from many people on how they treat there staff and the unprofessionalism that exsists. They are just like stephan starr

      One of the most idiotic posts, ever. What do YOU suggest, dumbass, since you’re such a “real” Philadelphian? Why don’t YOU open something and show us all how it’s done?

      Really, inform me what a “real Philadelphian” concept means to you?

      I really like the vibe at Farmer’s cabinet, but the quality to price ratio is way off. I guess some of the beers and drinks warrant those prices, but the food most assuredly does not. Let’s hope they keep this in mind with the new spot, but I guess if people will pay it, they can charge it.

      The scope of work that needs to be done here, considering this building is listed as a Historical Landmark, is going to require approval from the Historical Commission. Even if they get past this hurdle a Spring opening isn’t happening. I honestly don’t see this coming to fruition. Yes it is a better concept than a night club. I don’t see it happening though. And yes, Palmer is still open.
