Beer School at Dubh Linn Square

Yeah, yeah, we know. We keep blathering on about this Irish pub in Cherry Hill called Dubh Linn Square, and it’s all the way in, you know, Jersey. So why do we insist on wasting your time? Three reasons:

  1. It’s beautiful, entertaining and fun and we think you should call your old college roomie who moved to the Shore and meet him there for beer brunch
  2. That’s what happens when tight budgets force us to hire Jersey-based freelancers instead of writers who live anyplace better
  3. Trust us, if you lived in Jersey, you’d hang out there, too.

So now that we’ve dispensed with the qualifiers, let’s get to the business at hand: owner Mike McGeough is launching Beoir Scoil, which is Beer School to us Yanks.

Starting January 16, McGeough’s sister Patricia (who has spent 20 years brewing professionally in the U.K. and Africa) leads a rotating panel of beer experts who discuss and provide samples of one style per month. The classes run from 6:30-7:30 every third Monday and cost $20 per, with “scholarships” offered to regulars–which is just awesome and the way that all colleges should work, in our opinion.

The first class spotlights stouts, with panelists pouring Guinness (duh), a Russian Imperial Stout and a TBA local brew. And who are said suave and brilliant panelists hand-plucked from the upper echelons of beer academia? This month, speakers are Patricia, Dubh Linn Square’s g.m., and – allow me to momentarily step out of the third person voice – me. Given that all I requested for my last birthday was a bottle of Cigar City Brewing’s Hunahpu’s Imperial Stout, aged on cacao nibs, Madagascar vanilla beans, Ancho and Pasilla chiles and cinnamon, and released exclusively at the brewery one day a year, it should be a bonny event … even if it is in New Jersey.
