Beer and Food Working Together at American Sardine Bar

Posted by Foobooz on February 1st, 2012

Brian Freedman finds that the food at American Sardine Bar works just fine as an accompaniment to the bar’s beer program.

It’s with the simpler constructs that ASB is at its most charming. Brussels sprouts are straightforwardly conceived and wholly successful, robust half-globes with oyster sauce and tossed with sliced Thai chilies. The result is like a vegetal freebasing of umami, and just when you think it’ll all be too rich, the prickle of acid and heat from the chilies comes swooping in to clean up.

I find the food to be a little too salty…

I had the fried PB & J sandwich and it was good but then again I was really stoned.

What is Brian talking about? The food at Sardine Bar is garbage. A handful of us industry folk wandered there one night to check it out. They burnt 2 out of the 4 courses…including the fried PB&J sammich.

I’m happy to see this type of business in this particular neighborhood but the chef needs to keep a better eye out. We aren’t looking for top end food…just well cooked food.
