Foobooz TV: Hop Sing Laundromat Video Walkthrough
Posted by Jason Sheehan on February 7th, 2012
No, there’s no hard opening date yet. But Hop Sing Laundromat is getting close enough that its enigmatic owner Lêe let us (and our cameras) in for a quick peek at the seriously-really-almost-very-nearly-finished dining room. There’s not a lot of shots of the bar here–mostly because Lêe has spent the last few days bringing in his liquor and that side of the room is still kind of a mess. But it is also beautiful, with some custom touches that will just blow your mind.
When it finally opens for business, of course.

I have to break the code of silence because I can’t take it anymore. Hop Sing has been open for months. These constant stories are designed to simultaneously maintain the buzz and keep the rabble away, which is a pretty neat trick.

Tex,
Oh, no…..u didn’t! U may as well throw away that membership card since it no longer “valid”

Lol @ Tex. This is not true.

Why should I give a shit about some hyped up bar with a monkey motif in chinatown? Are monkey brains on the menu like in Indiana Jones?
February 7th, 2012 at 4:58 pm
Can you please not talk about this place any more?
February 7th, 2012 at 9:57 pm
I am interested in their actual cocktail program. Their liquor could be wonderful, and the touches superb, but if they make weak cocktails, it doesn’t matter. As far as I know, which isn’t much like everyone else, Lee is not a tender. So who is making the drinks?
February 8th, 2012 at 5:59 am
@Anthony. May be u should follow Lêe @hopsinglaundry on Twitter and ask for a personal tour then u can see/judge for yourself. But from what I hear there won’t be any involvement from so-called “New York consultants” like other cocktail bars in town.
@Andrew. Why do u always make negative comments about this place when all Foobooz or blog like this does is to inform readers about what goin on in Philly? If u hate these sort of story/info so much then why are u even here? Is Hop Sing Laundromat or this type of business somehow a personal threat to u? Please do share your “wisdom” with us mortals.
@Uncle Sam. U r just too stupid therefore I dun think we should even feed your brain to the monkeys. LOL!
February 8th, 2012 at 7:56 am
@Wash & Fold. Me is soo stupid that monkey ate brain. Foobooz has had a boner for this place for sooo long and now that I actually see it, it’s not that cool. We post negative comments on here to annoy people like you. And why are you vehemently defending this place? Judging by your cool name, you must have a hand in it.
February 8th, 2012 at 9:34 am
@Wash & Fold I always just assumed this place was a big practical joke. I never felt like I was making fun of the place when I did, just going along with the con.

If it is a serious business these guys need to get more serious. Owning a place is hard work and serious business if they want to succeed.
February 8th, 2012 at 11:19 pm
The wall decorations look interesting, and hopefully it will be good food and an entertaining place. HOWEVER, I don’t mean to be negative, but can someone truthfully explain why this place and this guy have been so hyped? Who the hell is Lee? I don’t mean to say that it matters if he was a “hit” somewhere else before this, but I’ve just never seen hype for an opening like this. Either way, it’s going to be packed at the beginning just because of all the talk.

Wonder how much the Chinatown mob is going to shake this guy down for to ensure that there are no “problems”.

I think he walked into the Franklin & said “It’d be really cool to own a bar. I think I’ll open a bar.” He obviously has money backing him up, whose money I’m not quite sure. The fact that he’s so “private” is both intriguing and infuriating. Who are you, dude? What did you do before this? You say you’re from New York. Did you run bars there? What gives? If you have run bars before, did you have a “good” reputation or a “bad” reputation? If someone wants to be a silent partner, I’m all for it, but I just think this “air of mystery” is a load of bullshit hype. The ad on Craigslist is looking for baristas (What? Coffee as well? Is it going to be a coffee shop during the day?) and a doorman (to keep the riff-raff out or to prevent trouble from coming in?). Hype. Hype. Hype. He (and or his investors) better hope he delivers.

wash/fold is lee, hoping to anonymously defend himself.
February 9th, 2012 at 12:43 pm
It hasn’t even opened and I’m already over it. This is what happens when you drag out the suspense too long. People start to become indifferent.
February 9th, 2012 at 12:51 pm
Thank u readers & “friends” for your kind words and we are looking forward to serving u soon.
February 9th, 2012 at 7:12 pm
@washfold Seriously, send a tweet to Hopsing & I can get a tour? A protected Twitter account. Yeah, I can just picture someone looking at my Twitter account, reading my tweets, seeing that I don’t have 1 million followers & saying “Nah. Just not cool enough to tour my bar.”
I seriously hope that it’s much bigger than it appears to be. Otherwise, drinks’ll have to start @ $20/pop (because we LOVE to camp) if this guy serously thinks he’s going to make a profit. If I’m paying X amount of $/drink, you better be damn sure I’m hanging out for as long as possible to get my money’s worth & watch the “trust fund baby show”. Unless, of course, you have to reserve tables and there’s a time limit for seatings. I just can’t see this place turning a profit. It’s one thing to stand in line in Rittenhouse Square. It will be quite another to stand in line inhaling the oh-so-funky smells of Chinatown.

@Michael,
We do offer tour if you forward such request to our twitter. We’ve done so for other and will do the same for you. Thank you

I know he is a real person and have negotiated few deals with him. Odd thing is that when it came time , the money never came through. Just a lot of talk and expectations. I can only wonder how many people have done work here and have actually received any money for their work or if everybody is getting a bunch of nonsense talk of what will be when his dream , plans or whatever he is trying to do comes to fruition. Prob only thing that will ever come is an insurance claim to collect on items and labor never actually paid for. Hmm we shall see if this man is scam or genius.either way should be entertaining to watch.
