As if Craig LaBan’s Four Bell mania wasn’t enough, today he highlights a number of his favorite restaurants in different categories.

  • New American (Full Service)
  • New American (BYOBs)
  • Distinctive Italian
  • Updated International
  • Gastropubs
  • Great Restaurants Deserving More Buzz
LaBan also uses the revisits to bestow a third bell on both Pumpkin and Fond. And a special shout out to the Feury brothers who both appear in the list, Terence for Fork and Patrick for Nectar.

As for great restaurants deserving more buzz, I simply have no idea why the Corner gets no buzz. I’ve had at least a half dozen meals there and they all come out perfect.

I have to agree with craigers on basically every point. Although, for the most part the “under the radar places” aren’t so under the radar, they are all very good. Though I would say resurrection would definitely qualify as underappreciated. I have been there, local 44 and memphis, and there is really no comparison. It is odd that the same owners own both the most underrated gastropub in the city, resurrection, and the most overrated, Memphis Taproom. About 5 years ago Memphis was terrific, now almost all dishes are a salty gelatinous vegan inspired mess.

Ulivo deserves to be on the ‘Distinctive Italian’ list, despite the fact that it’s only been open for a few months. My meal there was incredible & the service was solid.

It’s amazing that the city of Philadelphia has become such a hot spot for foodies and celeb chefs. Through it all, I give a lot of credit to young, aspiring chefs who really have a passion for food but may not have the notoriety of the others. One chef in particular that stands out in my mind is Mark Tropea of Sonata Restaurant in NoLibs. All of the restaurants listed are great, but I really feel like Mark adds something special to the city! Sonata is definitely deserving of more ‘buzz’.
