Is Xchange Happening Again?

Xchange was to replace the short-lived Center City Grille, which replaced several other short-lived concepts at 20th and Ludlow. The bar was open sporadically last summer (mainly on Wednesdays for Center City Sips) but has sat dormant through the fall and winter. When we walked by this morning we noticed new lights in front and a shiny new Xchange sign.

The orignal concept for the bar was to offer variable pricing, like a stock market for beer. We never understood how that idea would fly with the PLCB but it would at least be novel. We wonder though if anyone can make this location work.

      That’s actually a very cool concept. I just read about a bar in Kalamazoo, MI in the latest issue of DRAFT magazine that does this same concept and it sounded awesome. If they put together a good tap list at this place and promote it I think it would be a welcome addition to the neighborhood.

      I feel bad rooting against a place, but I get tired of passing by this corner in its various iterations and seeing how cheap, gimmicky and desperate it always looks. I want it to fail hard just to put it out of its misery. Then maybe someone will actually do something decent at this location.

      The concept wasn’t the problem with this place, it was the strip-club decor and complete lack of character. From the looks of the new sign and lights, they seem to be doubling down on the black leather “lounge” feel, ugh.

      As Barryg stated above. XChange 2.0 is destined for the same fate as the original.

      its same owner as before, it will fail, doug can’t manage his way out of a paper bag.

      It reopened, they’ve definitely doubled down on the North Philly strip-club motif.

      Yes, we reopened mid-May of this year with new management and new staff. I am one of the new partners of Xchange, and am very excited about the future of our bar. Our staff are super friendly and talented, our drink specials are some of the best, and we offer some of the most comfortable outdoor seating in philly.
      Come in sometime and experience the new Xchange. We offer entertainment throughout the week, with Sunday night Karaoke DJ Dance Parties, Monday night Jokepile comedy and open mic, to Wednesday Caribbean night with legendary DJ Champe. To name a few of our offerings, and we never have a cover for our weekly events.

      I for one live nearby and do not appreciate the extremely loud bass music and music in general. I can hear it from my bedroom. I am pretty certain the place does not have the proper licensing/sound blocking for that loud of music. It is not designed for a nightclub type establishment and to do that on a Sunday night in a residential area is rude. The good news is it probably will not be around by winter.

      J I don’t like this place either but 20th & Market is hardly a residential neighborhood.

      I agree not completely residential. However, it is on 20th, and there are the co-op high rises right there and other brownstones and mid-rises right there. Every other place has the required sound proof and or zoning to support quasi “shot bar” lmao feel. It is also such and eye sore.

      What a waste of real estate for the area. I’m glad they are clueless about running the place, and when it fails maybe somebody will come along and deveolpe the property into it’s highest and best use.
