Stateside Receives Enthusiastic Two Bell Review

George Sabatino and Stateside on East Passyunk get a praise-filled two bell review from Craig LaBan.

Whether Sabatino can more than double his kitchen’s already labor-intensive output remains to be seen. But he’d better start stuffing more of those homemade sausages right now – because I loved the duck link seasoned with sage and cinnamon. And I was especially taken by the truffled sausage with molten rich marrow, set over vibrant green Brussels-sprout puree with pickled sunchokes, which more than any of the other celebrated ingredients was the dish’s brilliant spark.

      This isn’t a surprise at all, and a third bell within a year wouldnt be a surprise either. Sabatino is one of the most talented chefs in the city. Everything i’ve eaten here knocked my socks off.

      I’m pretty surprised its not three bells. I don’t know anyone who doesn’t love this place (decor aside)!

      I think LaBan wants to make sure the kitchen will be able to handle the extra 50 seats when the summer rolls around. I’m sure they will be able to handle. He essentially gave them 3 stars (saying its a two star but can easily earn a third). Just think he doesnt want to go too far out on a limb without letting them get through a summer. The food here is amazing.

      I’ll be the first to admit it; i dont understand all the love. I’ve only been here once, had the shaved vegetable salad which tasted identical to the kale salad at the whole foods salad bar and the scallops were so drowned in kohlrabi and sauce that it was tough to find the main ingredient.

      I’ll try again but I didnt notice a 3 star restaurant.

      I agree with Food Phan. I went to this restaurant once and was disappointed after hearing so many great things. Everything thing I had was overwhelmingly salty, the brussel sprouts were drowning in oil and the pork belly was dry. That said, I could see promise and maybe they were just having an off day.
