Empanada Curse Continues

My bad karma empanada curse continues. Today, comes word that Cuba Libre’s late-night empanada bodega, Empanada Alley will not open next Friday. Turns out neighbors are concerned that the after hours empanada stand would bring too much noise to Strawberry Street between Second and Third Streets in Old City.

Alma Cuba owner Barry Gutin says “We recently learned there are a few families living in the buildings surrounding our back door, including one with a set of 10-month-old twins, whose sleep we do not wish to disturb.” Gutin will feature the concept as a mobile stand going forward.       seriously? these people live a half-block from market and 2nd street in Old City, and they are worried about noise? Blow me, NIMBYs.

      Alex, normally I’m as anti-NIMBY as anyone, but these people live on a side street that is probably fairly quiet despite it’s proximity to Market street.

      They could easily set up a mobile stand or truck across Market St near Christ Church. Better yet, they should invest in one of the run down storefronts across the street from Alma de Cuba, and make a full time empanada and cuban sandwich stand.

      I live on this alley, maybe 100 feet south of Cuba Libre’s back. An empanada stand isn’t going to increase its Friday night loudness one bit – it’s already gets 90% of 3rd and Chestnut’s noise, even if foot traffic is relatively low. So, IMO, this is moronic NIMBYism.

      I like Mike’s suggestion but during the day I prefer the empanadas at Sketch. They’re the best!

      I’ve lived in the area for 20 years and Strawberry Street is much quieter than 2nd and Market St. I don’t think Pat lives on the street since the intersection closest to where he lives is 2nd and Chestnut, not 3rd and Chestnut. I think Mr, Guten realized that being hidden on a side street probably wasn’t a good idea. His partner Mr. Cohen owns a vending company so have a mobile truck is a no brainer.

      Seemed like an idiotic idea from conception. A dark alley with lots of hiding spots inviting stoned people to chow cheap food after 2 am. Which dishwasher thought this one up?

      I think you’re right about Pat, Michael. If he even lived in Old City, he’d know that 3rd and Chestnut isn’t all that noisy.

      Mr. Etchells, were you really planning on braving the 3AM Old City crowds for an empanada? I believe you’ll still be able to get them during regular hours at Cuba Libre itself.
