BlueCat Opens on Fairmount

BlueCat, which we first told you about in December has opened at 1921 Fairmount Avenue. The airy Latin BYOB is by the husband and wife team of Guy Shapiro and his wife Luli Canuso. Shapiro has worked for the Toscana Restaurant Group and with Wildflower in New Jersey. Canuso was a pastry chef at Le Bec-Fin.

Michael Klein tells us that the restaurant name and wall-sized mural pictured above are inspired by the couple’s pet Russian blue cat.

BlueCat will be joined later this year by Mugshots, which is moving to the new mixed-use building from its location at 21st and Fairmount.

      also, location-wise, hidden in the pennsylvanian is far worse. Oh, and Isabel’s got some meh reviews and la calaca feliz is booming just a couple blocks away from it.

      This place looks really effin cool. Very excited to try it out, Mugshots is going in next door – looks like it must be a smaller location than they have currently.

      Fantastic food and the mural in person is awesome! Very unique Latin themed food that is unusually light, which is a nice change of pace. Definitely a must try place, and save room for desert!

      Hey Art Critic, you big jerk, I’ve eaten at this restaurant that barely just opened yet eight dozen times, and each one has been the best meal of my entire life ever. I took my [insert acquaintance/family member/coworker] here and they also said it was the best meal of [his/her/it's] life. In person the mural also looks like the best mural in the world, haven’t you ever wanted to be seated beneath a giant blue cat that looks like it’s about to take a whiz while winking at you? Leave the restaurant reviews to the many great fans of [insert name of restaurant], hater!!

      All well ,however that restaurant is not in Fairmount it is in Francisville, North of Fairmount and east of the Eastern state Penitentiary is Francisville. South of Fairmount from Pa. Ave. to Broad is Spring Garden. West of the prison ,north of Fairmount to Girard Ave is Fairmount.Please get it right.

      Run, don’t walk to Blue Cat
      Went for lunch, AMAZING. Bright, sunny corner spot. Casual.

      Not only is it wonderful to see the influx of new restaurants in the neighborhood but the food at Blue Cat was extraordinary. The flavor combinations were amazing and the food so fresh. Had the following:

      Flaky pastry empanadas stuffed with spinach, mushrooms and oaxaca cheese served with a watermelon salad and green pesto
      Grilled asparagus and mushrooms with a smoky cream sauce
      Salmon with a mango pineapple relish, sweet plantains and crispy roasted potatoes on a bed of kale
      Creamy rice pudding
      Orange blossom flan

      They’ve got the more traditional rice and beans, guacamole but also a host of latin american sandwiches, salads and entrees like arroz con pollo. Prices range from $7 empanadas to $10-$13 salads/sandwiches/entrees with specials like the salmon$18.

      Atmosphere is casual, almost upscale cafeteria like with all the open windows. I was expecting good but not amazing food. When the food arrived we couldn’t believe how flavorful, fresh and delicious it was with some incredibly different taste combinations.
