Ah Drats, New Belgium Chooses Asheville Over Philadelphia

New Belgium has been looking for the location for a second brewery for the past several months. Word leaked that the two finalists were Asheville, North Carolina and Philadelphia. Today the Colorado based brewery announced that the new brewery would be in Asheville.

In Don Russell’s (aka Joe Sixpack) newsletter today  Russell interviewed Alan Greenberger, deputy mayor for economic development and the city’s commerce director. Greenberger told Russell that “New Belgium may feel that the town of Asheville reflects their corporate culture” better than Philadelphia. The Philadelphia location toured by New Belgium folk was a 30-acre site at the Navy Yard.

Guess we better start courting Russian River.

      They discussed how easy it is to open and do business in Philadelphia with American Sardine Bar.

      If only Johnny Utah’s had been open in time!

      Oh well, I’m sure their decision to locate 10 hours further away from New York and New England won’t hurt them at all as gas prices continue to climb.

      Its probably because Asheville is the most hippy/granola city on the East Coast.

      @el, why do you think the city didn’t work with them? It sounds like Greenberger was involved. Of course the Navy Yard is a lot easier to market because of the tax breaks.

      Russian River would never happen. It’s a tiny, niche brewery.

      Lew Bryson was on the right track yesterday. A more realistic possibility (in the long-term though) would be a Deschutes East. They basically have no presence yet east of the Mississippi, save for the annual shipment to Philly for PBW. They’re growing rapidly and are currently doing a major expansion to their brewing facility in Bend, Oregon. For 2010 they were the the 5th largest craft brewery in terms of sales volume.
