Johnny Utahs Addresses Our Mechanical Bull Shortage

Posted by Foobooz on April 5th, 2012

In the not so distant future we’ll look back on the time between when Buckhead Saloon closed and March 2012 as the dark ages in Philadelphia. Back then, the city didn’t feature a single mechanical bull. But then Xfinity Live and the PBR Bar opened and graced us with a new mechanical bull. And later this month Buckhead Saloon on North 3rd Street will reopen as Johnny Utahs, a country rock bar that will also feature a mechanical bull.

Get ready to ride, because there will be two mechanical bulls in town, and in the case of Johnny Utahs; 25 HDTVs, projection screens, country rock and party music.

The grand opening is set for April 26th.

      JOHNNY UTAH’S should be concerned with the content of their Craigslist ad looking for members of staff between the ages of 18-27.
      Is age discrimination (flippantly mentioned in the ad) an EEOC issue? It’s one thing to NOT hire certain types of people (it happens all the time), but to use it in a help wanted ad?

    • gaj

      Hey Malcoln..why not be happy with the idea they are hiring people. who cares about the age. everyone loves to stand on their soap box and become the defender of all people. maybe the job is very specific and that’s the age range they need, as long as people are working that’s what counts. So quick to judge, how about saying thank you to companies that are still genrating revenue in a down economy.

    • INFOWARS

      Yes, let’s all bow down to the companies who out of the largess of their hearts open crappy western bars at the SOUTH PHILADELPHIA SPORTS COMPLEX, so that we plebes may eat. Thank goodness for them.

      But seriously, who cares about this place, wheres the stuff about Victory?

    • Michael G

      Hey at least the ad didn’t say we are looking women under 30 C cup or bigger need only apply.

    • Incredible

      That age thing is kinda scummy and definitely seems illegal

    • John E.

      If you don’t know the law and who is in a protected class and what’s a legitimate job qualification and how big your company need ago be before it is subject to what laws, then don’t assume something is illegal. It’s like saying Hooters is breaking the law by hiring only women waitresses or a Catholic church is breaking the law by hiring only male priests.

    • DDDCup

      Sounds like John E. works for Johnny Utah’s. Sorry, John, but saying that you ONLY want people within a certain age range sounds shitty. Jobs are hard to get, but to discourage someone because they’re a 30 year-old MILF from applying doesn’t generate good karma in my book. John, the economy sucks. I know good servers who have been out of work for a year, and NOT for lack of trying, either. Yeah, let’s all bow down to this f-ing company, who ONLY wants to hire people of a certain age range. DICK! I give it a year.

      You’re right, I don’t know exactly how big a company needs to be before it is subject to what laws, PLEASE ENLIGHTEN ME. I’m just a poor, uneducated woman.

      What I Found On-Line (and this is from 1967, I believe, BEFORE THE ECONOMY TANKED::
      (a) The Congress hereby finds and declares that-

      (1) in the face of rising productivity and affluence, older workers find themselves disadvantaged in their efforts to retain employment, and especially to regain employment when displaced from jobs;

      (2) the setting of arbitrary age limits regardless of potential for job performance has become a common practice, and certain otherwise desirable practices may work to the disadvantage of older persons;

      (3) the incidence of unemployment, especially long-term unemployment with resultant deterioration of skill, morale, and employer acceptability is, relative to the younger ages, high among older workers; their numbers are great and growing; and their employment problems grave;

      (4) the existence in industries affecting commerce, of arbitrary discrimination in employment because of age, burdens commerce and the free flow of goods in commerce.

      (b) It is therefore the purpose of this chapter to promote employment of older persons based on their ability rather than age; to prohibit arbitrary age discrimination in employment; to help employers and workers find ways of meeting problems arising from the impact of age on employment.

      So, I’m 30 w/ great experience and awesome references. I wonder if I applied, and they didn’t hire me, could I $ue? How about if I’m a 30 year-old member of a minority group?
      Still protected then?
      C’mon John, I’m waiting for the pearls of wisdom to drop from your mouth. Or do you need to contact your PR/legal team?
      Sid Gold is an awesome lawyer for this kind of stuff. He does take cases on contingency.
      I think I’ll call Fox29 on this too. I’m REALLY bored, and this is “buggin’ me”. I drank my “hater-ade” this morning and am itching for a fight.

      THE AD IN QUESTION: Just in case it expires from Craigslist

      I think youse knuckleheads have Way too much time and Way too little sense of Humor that y’all are even IN this P*ssing contest. Shut Up and have a drink already.

      ps-I was down there for a Bruce Show. It’s ok, like a gigantus Chickie’s & Pete’s, nice enough, but Not a destination. I’d much rather drink it up in Center City and take the subway. And go to the Philadium before a Phillies day game.
      Now shake hands and have a drink, numbskulls, for crying out loud…
      JeezeLouise…

      Short answers:
      Cindy – No, because you’re 30, which is not a protected group.
      DDDCup – It must be great to wish and hope the businesses starting up in Philadelphia fail. I’m sure you’d like it if people would say that I give it a year before you are out of your job. No, I don’t work for this company, but my point is people shouldn’t assume it’s illegally discriminating based on age. Oh, and the ADEA specifically has an exception for bona fide occupational qualifications reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. Which is why you don’t find 60 year old waitresses at Hooters.

    • ThatBuilding

      There must be something about discrimination associated with that building. Isn’t that connected to McFadden’s where race instead of age was the factor?

    • Cindy

      John, a woman never reveals her age. I’m quite a few years past 30, and I know much older servers that can run RINGS around these youngsters. If I were to say that a lot of servers that I’ve met in their early-20′s are hard “partiers”, it’s based on what I’ve seen. Some of them show up for work late, hungover, high, or not at all. Yeah, I did my share of dirt when I was younger. You have fun and you grow up.

      I’m just REALLY turned off by this ad. I work in a hotel now (in Center City) and I would send people to Xfinity Live (and that’s saying A LOT!) over Johnny Utah’s just on GP. The same way I would send people to Fergie’s rather than McFadden’s. One of my co-workers worked at McFadden’s. She was African American. She said that she would always get bad stations and be first cut. (Maybe they thought that she “sucked”. I don’t know.)

      Oh, and the ADEA specifically has an exception for bona fide occupational qualifications reasonably necessary to the normal operation of the particular business. Which is why you don’t find 60 year old waitresses at Hooters.

      John, you use Hooters like they’re the standard-bearers of legalized discrimination. FYI, Hooters has been sued. You can look it up. I’m sure they were sued several times more with iron-clad settlement confidentiality agreements. What, John, pray tell can a 18-27 year-old DO that a 30-40 year-old can’t? Seriously? What does Johnny Utah’s require? The ability to lift a tray of shots over one’s head while working a crowd? There’s ladies in Vegas and AC that have been able to do that for years. The ability to carry a bucket of ice or a keg of beer up/down some steps? I’m sure Arnold Swarzenegger could do that and how old is he? Is there some kind of physical fitness requirement/test during the application process? 50 yard dash? Shoveling mechanical bullshit? THAT, JOHN, sounds like your specialty.

      As far as someone giving it a year goes, it’s extremely expensive to open a restaurant. A lot of restaurants don’t turn a profit for the first couple of years. Everybody wants to open a restaurant but doesn’t have the first clue as to how to do it. They look at it as a quick way to make a buck. Starting out with an (IMO) ad as distasteful as theirs is not a way to generate good publicity. So what, you want 18-27 year-olds working for you? Is it because you want to attract 18-27 year-olds as customers with none of us “old farts” (who happen to be fans of Tammy Wynette, Johnny Cash, Loretta Lynn, et al) darkening your doorway.
      I hope your Taylor Swift karaoke nights are successful.

      I think everyone is over looking the obvious…why would you open a country music bar in philly???? Come on now
