Ramen Bar Coming to West Philly

Posted by Foobooz on April 26th, 2012

A fluorescent orange liquor license is in the window of 4040 Locust Street, the former home of the Strikes bowling alley and Locust Moon comic book store. The license application lists the business as Ramen Bar Inc., which of course gets our noodle senses tingling. Although  principals involved have been silent we have been able to string together some more details.

Back in January, a help-wanted ad posted online in New York was looking for a head chef for a ramen restaurant close to the University of Pennsylvania. The ad required a minimum of five years of ramen cooking experience and Japanese language skills. The ad listed the opening date as May of 2012. We’re not certain this is for the same ramen restaurant, but it seems likely.

We’ll let you know as soon as we get more information.

This ramen craze that philly supposedly has is a fraud. I have been going to nom nom on a weekly basis, which by the way has been improving every time, and I see less and less people there. There is at most 3 people there every time I frequent. Philly people just wanted to be at these places around the openings so they can think they are a part of the latest fad, and it ends there. All these new ramen places set to open are not sustainable because philly is not ramen crazed as the food media makes it out to be.

I agree that Nom Nom is getting better each time I’ve been there. As for the lack of crowds, I counted 25 people
In there around 1:30 on Tuesday. And this is with a limited menu of only pork and no vegetarian options.

There are now pork buns though.
