Max’s Brew Bar Opens at the Piazza

Posted by Foobooz on May 15th, 2012

Max’s Brew Bar, the beer-centric replacement for the short lived Raw and stillborn Speck, opened quietly last Friday. The spot on the Piazza at Schmidts features 34 beers on tap and karaoke every night. In June a self-service automated beer wall is promised.

We’ve reached out for a full beer list but in the meantime, here’s what we can deduce from the photo above:

  • Palm
  • Blue Moon
  • Sierra Nevada
  • Rogues Dead Guy
  • Magic Hat #9
  • Dale’s Pale Ale
  • Yuengling Lager
  • Victory Golden Monkey?

I think Bob Newhart owes somebody an apology.

    • Tim

Come by Friday 7p-9p $4 Crafts (very few exceptions)

    • John

With the exception of a few taps (Firestone, Port, 21st, Green Flash), that list is pretty basic and safe. I don’t get how places that have “brew” or “taproom” or “drafthouse”, etc in their name keep their beer lists so basic.

    • Amy

Great use for a $1,000,000 kitchen.

So is this place going to run by the guys from Red Zone as reported a while ago?

Also, why is Piazza filled with such generic restaurant/bar concepts? Feels like a casino restaurant lineup there. Only PYT has any character.

    • Dan

The list is fine, but it is odd that so many generic, suburban-type, concepts keep going into the Piazza. It is so out of character for No Libs/Fishtown. Who is going? It’s hard to believe that many people come in from conshy and yunk to frequent these places. I thought that crowd liked to take the R6 right to Suburban so they could quickly hit up drinkers and irish pub and be surrounded by their peers? That way they can get home quick without encountering any “hipsters” or “urbaners” on the subway. I guess these places hope to bring in the drunk driving set…

    • Steve P

No Libs is not like that anymore. It’s the new Old City.

    • Tim

Max’s does not have an affiliation to Red Zone management. Philly.com was incorrect when they initially reported that

3 Philosophers, Allagash Black, Golden Monkey Port Brewing Anniversary and 21st Admendment are the only exceptions on that list. Same goes for the Weekday 4p-7p happy hour. The beers will be rotating and we will be getting into more and more unique or rare beer as we establish relationships with distributors.

We always welcome feedback and suggestions.

    • Frank

      Looks like a dbag factory.

    • John

Oh wow another Jersey douche spot.

    • Rough

Wow, tough audience on here. Give the guys a chance for cripes sake

    • Rough

Oops, made a mistake.. If Red Zone Tim is involved then it’s a douchebag place. Tim, close your goddamn doors when blasting music or televisions. Quit acting ghetto.

    • Joey

Oh yeaaaahhhh! Get that bass a PUMPIN’ and get the party THUMPIN’.

    • Tom

I hope this place is successful in spite of the hipster snobs who hate this place for no good reason. It’s obvious that the beer list is very extensive. And yet it’s still labeled as generic? Why? Because it’s not under the El or have exposed brick? You guys take your hipster creed way to seriously.

    • meh-

Nice beer list. The locals sounding off against this place sound like douches.

    • pj

yeah why not be positive and try to show the place some support. tired of people bringing everyone down for not being as urban and hip as they consider themselves

    • Bill

This place is awesome. I’ve been here twice since the grand opening last weekend. Beer list is awesome and constantly changing and never was a panini fan but these are worth trying. Fries are best I’ve had.

    • Speed Racer

Once again- Good Luck fellas. I know some of the bartenders and I am sure you are going to get slammed with people during the concerts. Great Beer selection… looking forward to having a beer after the work day is done. Cheers to you guys…

    • Dinger

Awesome place. Good food & even better bar staff. Knowledgeable & friendly. In such a yuppie area it’s refreshing to meet some down to earth folks. Great craft beer selection & great staff- what more can a friendly patron ask for? All you haters need to take your nose out of the clouds & appreciate the simple pleasures in life. Best wishes to Max’s & everyone involved. We’ll definitely be back soon!!

    • Candy

Hey at least it’s not a dollar store, Five Below or Family Dollar. Let’s save our energies to fight the real enemy.

    • barryg

@Candy yea got forbid there is some place to buy anything that is not food or drink.

    • Steve

Maybe barryg should move out of the old city entertainment district if he does not like loudness, your own fault for moving there …..sissy

    • Steve

Sorry barryg this was meant for rough!

    • CM

You’ve got it wrong, Steve. Red Zone should be the one to move out of the the Old City NEIGHBORHOOD, since they are completely retarded when it comes to obeying the most basic liquor laws. Even other OC bar owners and employees can’t stand them.

    • Steve

Who am I to argue old city is a dump anyway , but which liquor laws are you referring to ? I didn’t see anything shady when I was there!

Love this place… Let me at it… Great times!
