Doobies Gets a Sign

Posted by Foobooz on May 18th, 2012

The much loved Doobies bar at 22nd and Lombard hasn’t had a sign for as long as we can remember (though the building apparently did in 1964). But this morning we spotted this sparkling beauty shining in the morning sun.

:( I liked that it was hard to find.

It had a sign until a couple of decades ago, before the remodel that made it all fancy. Also, vertical grey wood siding, a yellowed drop ceiling, and (slightly) larger bathrooms. And there is no apostrophe, if you’ll notice. It’s plural, not possessive.

YAY!!! I’m glad everyone has noticed, including Foobooz!! Funny story about the sign. While most folks think it is a new sign, it is actually the OLD sign that was up from sometime in 1976 to September of 2004. The old facade (barnwood & Garden State brickface) was TIRED!! We decided to replace the crumbling bricks, etc with stucco. The day the sign came down, someone asked what we were going to do with it. I told them to take it, as it was severely dry rotted. Of course, I regretted my decision later. Forward to Fall 2010, Mark (who works at Doobs) was talking to a friend of his who asked if I was ever going to put a sign back up on the building. Mark told him at some point we were going to, but hadn’t decided yet on what. The guy said, “I have your old sign in my basement”. To which Mark replied, “Really? Can we have it back”? The guy gave it back to Mark, who gave it to me for my birthday in Oct 2010. We had it restored & finally put it back up this week. Look for lights to follow. And a HUGE thanks to Mark & his friend for getting back out little piece of Doobies history. And thanks Duncan for mentioning the apostrophe, which shouldn’t be there. Definitely a bone of contention for me. :-) Check out the old facade here: https://www.facebook.com/home.php

It’s so hard to find such an interesting artisan looking sign these days so I’m not surprised it’s an old one restored. Love the colors and design. We’ve been working on ideas for a sign at our new shop, Mushmina on 16th and South, your new neighbors. Looks great and love the story! Congrats
