The Parisian import, Diner en Blanc, is coming to Philadelphia on August 23rd. Diner en Blanc is an event that began in Paris with just a few friends who had the idea to plan a little flash mob (not a Philly-style flash mob, but Everywhere-Else Style) by having a fancy, surprise picnic in a public space. Soon, the event grew and over the last 25 or so years it has gained in attendance–now drawing nearly 15,000 diners in cities across Europe.
Since then, the idea has evolved again. These days it takes the form of thousands of people trying to get on a waiting list in hopes of snagging one of the coveted spots, preparing your own fine dinner, and being led (while wearing all white) by organizers to a secret spot in a public space (like the Eiffel Tower or the Champs-Elysses) on the day of the event.
The goal of Diner en Blanc is to bring together people from all over the city for a night of cultural enjoyment and to enhance the use of some ordinary public space (like the Eiffel Tower or the Champs-Elysses) just for one night, leaving no trace behind. Though a 1000+ guests are expected to attend, the registration for Diner en Blanc is limited.
The waiting list for Philly’s turn at this pop-up mystery dinner is already open. And in a few weeks, registration will begin and those who have signed up in time will receive notification to register themselves and a guest, as well as to pick a meeting spot from which they will be led to the secret venue. If registrants can’t (or won’t) bring their own picnic they can pre-order one from the official caterer, Garces Catering.
