Vetri Raises Tasting Menu Price

Posted by Foobooz on July 16th, 2012

phl 23

A Chowhound posted that Vetri’s tasting menu will go be going up from $135 to $155 per person in September. As was noted, the increase puts Vetri’s price to just north of Le Bec Fin 2.0′s $150 prix fixe.

We found cwdonald’s analysis to be quite astute.

So Basically what we have here is the best restaurant in Philadelphia saying that they deserve to charge the most… I doubt this will hurt their business, and it allows them to “keep” their position, signaled by price, as the best restaurant in the city, (whether it is deserved is a matter of debate of course) but economists agree that price is often a signal of perceived quality. In the drug industry for example we launch drugs and the price selection relative to products on the market suggests value. If a new product comes out equal or less, it is often perceived as less valuable. Vetri is just saying it is as good as the new kid on the block, LBF v2.

Really? No food is worth $155 a person, lets not forget that this is Italian food, not anything that special.

    • Mike

I know it’s Vetri and all but raising a price is news?

Oh wait, this headline just in: Half gallons of ice cream aren’t really a half gallon anymore. News at 6.

    • Philly Ray

What’s news is that Foobooz just wrote an article by primarily using a Chowhound post. No original reporting today? Will cwdonald receive compensation?

    • Foie Milkshake

      @philly ray,

      I believe it’s exactly the opposite…

I’m pretty sure cwdonald had to pay Philly Mag for the mention.

      Just sayin

    • Foodie77077

      Really? Not worth it.

    • Tex

      Hubris.
Just a strategic move to claim the position of most expensive restaurant in the city.
At the end of the day it is still even MORE overpriced Italian food.

    • Tex

Tex @ 6 is not the person who’s been commenting under that name for the last couple years. That person has no problem with Vetri charging $155.

    • Pierre Herme

      It’s not a price it’s a tax….or is it a penalty….????

    • CaptainLogic

clearly none of you have ACTUALLY eaten at Vetri…its like anal sex, don’t knock it til you try it!

    • Suburbanite

If you’re complaining about a 20 dollar price increase, then I don’t think you should be considering eating at Vetri in the first place… Just sayin…

    • Tex-Mex

Hey Tex#7 Tex#6 is my cousin from San Antonio besides Texas is a big state. There is room for all of us. Lets all meet for nachos and margaritas soon.

    • Hamburglar

Captainlogic nailed it. On the browneye.

The meal I had at Vetri was amazing…I also dropped $150 at at LBF v2 and they are both worthwhile if you like to spend your money on restaurant meals. Let’s not forget it is a business after all. They owe it to their investors to maximize profits…if they can keep the restaurant filled after the move, it was the right thing to do.

    • Ellen is retarded

No, they don’t owe it to their investors to maximize their profits. This is an absurd “market-driven” way to think about things, and a reason why wall street is as corrupt as it is.

What and who they do owe is exemplary value and service to their customers. If they don’t do this, then guess what? No profits for shareholders.

Keep your half-baked idiotic economic theories to yourself hon, and just talk about the food.

    • Questions

New to town…….does ths include service charge or is tip extra……..is vertical worth it I only have about four hundred to spend so wil I not even be able to get a glass of wine or one for my partner and I……do you leave hungry I have heard that is the case at times ……..do they still ofer any bob days. ……….basically with tip and wine it is 600 is that correct

    • Buckethead

      @ Questions:

Tip is extra. The price hike hasn’t taken effect yet though, so for now it’s still $135 per person. I was there a couple months ago and it was about $600 all told for two people with the less-expensive wine pairing option, tax, and tip.

If I were you I’d go to Osteria instead, it’s better and much, much less expensive than Vetri.

    • drjane

We ate at Vetri in May and it certainly rates as one of my top 5 dinners–better than Alinea in my book because it was less pretentious and the service was better. The wine pairings were definitely worth getting–we sought out and bought several of the selections at a local store because the wines were just that good. Would I go back next week? Probably not. Next year? In a heartbeat.

      @Drjane

Learn how to shill post like a pro.
You are most certainly affiliated with the restaurant otherwise you would not be making clueless ridiculous claims.

Saying it rates as one of your top 5 dinners is a meaningless statement without a context.
Drink all the Vetri kool aid you want but you are not ever going to convince anyone it is better than Alinea. That is just a joke.

EVEN Marc Vetri would look entirely comical to even suggest his restaurant was better than Alinea.

There is nothing special about the wine list other than it is way overpriced.

$600 for an Italian dinner that as most people agree has no luxury ingredients is simply crazy.

The most annoying thing about the price hike is not that you will be actually getting anything more for your money. It is just for bragging rights to be the most expensive tasting menu in the city. It is basically a FU Philadelphia.

Why is it that fantastic Italian food should cost less than fantastic French, or fantastic new American, or fantastic whatever food? Do chefs have to spend a certain percentage of their revenues on sous-vide depreciation?

    • Reply to pat

Becsuse the bottom line is you are paying 155$ for pasta….

    • Jimmy

      It’s $20/person. Get over it.

    • Another Reply To Pat

Fantastic Italian Food Should cost as much as fantastic French food if it uses the same quality of ingredients with the same level of luxury. In this case it does not.
Desserts in Italian restaurants are also a joke because they are just basic desserts with Italian names to make them sound fancy.

      @Jimmy is isn’t $20 a person it is $155 a person.
More money than Eleven Madison Park-Le Bernadin and Jean Georges.
