David Katz Closes Meme

Yesterday David Katz hosted a pork dinner with some of his chef friends including Jennifer Carroll, Monica Glass, Terence Feury, Michael Solomonov (Zahav), Peter Woolsey (Bistrot La Minette) and others. The blowout dinner also served to be the last service for Meme which is calling it quits after four years.

Last nights pork dinner was our last service. I’m bowing out after 4 yrs. Thanks for the support and keep following on twitter for updates.

      That’s too bad, i really like the fried chicken and the sizzling mussels. I hope Katz returns soon to CC with another place.

      This sucks. Meme was one of my favorite spots in Center City – started going a few weeks in and have eaten there dozens of times since. I wish DK well and hope he sticks around Philly.

      After hearing such good things about Meme, I wanted to give it another chance. Our first visit was probably the worst experience we have had in a Philly restaurant . The food was so overly salted, it was barely edible and our server clearly did not want to be working that night. It was a night to forget.

      That blows, I’d had some fantastic meals at Meme and hoped to go again. I really hope Katz opens his own place again. Not interested in giving money to Hornik at Morgan’s Pier, until he shuts down douchebars Lucy’s Hat Shop and Drinker’s.

      damn! that’s sad news. hope we continue to get Katz’s cooking…morgan’s pier isn’t a good showcase for one of his styles of homestyle cooking, but i’ll miss the more bistro-y things. that roast chicken was a revelation, for example.

      David Katz is one of the most thoughtful, honest and talented cooks I have ever worked with. We should all be a little sad but let’s all hope he lands on his feet somewhere soon so even more people can experience his style of cooking.

      Well there goes my fantasy of becoming rich, buying some mansion on Delancey Place and making Meme my neighborhood joint for dinner several nights a week. Hopefully he opens another place in town.

      Best of luck to Katz and the Meme squad. I’ve eaten there a handful of times over the years and it was also a wonderful experience.

      Meme was on my to try list for years… I just never made it there, and now I very much regret it. Lesson to learn – don’t take good restaurants for granted (or they’ll close on you). Morgan’s is great though!

      Damn, cleevus kinda nailed it. Didn’t want to kick dirt, but it was an average BYO. The nice thing was that it was easy to get in without a reservation and you could bring your own bottle. The food was pretty standard “farm-to-table” with a fish filet, one simply prepared offal dish and maybe a boring pork dish. All the dishes could easily be replicated by a competent home cook with a whole foods nearby. It was a I don’t feel like doing dishes kinda place, no big loss there…

      This is a sad day! Ive eaten at meme regularly for 4 years including the pork dinner last night and had no idea. Good luck to DK and his staff and hopefully he stays in Philly.

      I think it was a little conservative menu-wise, but look at that neighborhood. I am sure they had a ton of older regulars that wanted that kind of food; I bet his next venture is more experimental. He definitely knows flavors and how to cook, and the waitstaff was well disciplined, unlike many places. And how can you knock on la minette? Bistrot la Minette probably has the best hype-to-quality ratio of any place in Philly. No one ever talks about it, but it’s one of the best places in town. The only criticism you can level at those two places that they share in common, is that they are not loud, drink your face off, “It’s friday and I am out!” type places. Some would say that makes them boring. I consider it rare and a virtue.

      I’ve eaten at Meme more than a few times. I’ve always found the dishes to be well thought out with great depth of flavor. There was no pretension in the food. I think Dan is mistaken. Not many home cooks are capable of creating such flavors.

      Dan, I’m sure you could cook the hell out of a piece of fish. I’d say that’s just a little different than feeding 100 people with one or two other guys, all within the span of about 4 hours, at a professional level.

      That place was wack. Trailed there before and Katz and his staff were all rude and so full of themselves. Why is it that every other chef/owner out there seems to think they don’t have to work the line everyday…and then they scratch their heads wondering why they are closing when their food is actually good.
