Buca di Beppo Goes Bust

Posted by Foobooz on August 9th, 2012

Grub Street reports that Buca di Beppo on 15th Street has closed. Candlelight vigil begins this evening at 6 p.m. The Italian chain is pulling out of its Center City location almost five years after it was first reported that they were looking to leave.

Michael Klein delivers this additional tidbit, a “New Jersey-based pub chain is in deep negotiations for 15th Street.” Sounds like P.J. Whelihan’s to us. And we’re A-OK with that, we much prefer PJ’s to Fox and Hound. And it will be a welcome sight to Jerseyites exiting the PATCO station down the block.

UPDATE: Michael Klein has updated his post with a denial from the property agent regarding the NJ based pub.

      I’ll stick with McGlinchey’s, thanks.

Klein has an update, no NJ-based pub: “The property’s listing agent says my report that a New Jersey-based pub is negotiating to lease the space is false.”

or how about a victory brewpub?

A Yards or Philadelphia Brewing Company brew pub would be ideal for this location.

why would anyone eagerly await some mediocre chain restaurant (and believe me, PJ’s is less than mediocre) in a city filled with much more amazing places?

I guess a Victory or Sly Fox brew pub would be better than another Irish pub, but I haven’t been impressed by the food at the current Victory and Sly Fox locations.

Something about a Sly Fox brewpub at that location just sounds so right.

      I love this beery dreaming.

Glad to see Buca go. We don’t need any more pubs on that strip. Put in something up scale and elegant. The whole area needs an overhaul.
