Taste Illustrated: Coping with the Line at Shake Shack

Posted by Foobooz on August 29th, 2012

We’ve done a scientific study of the occasionally epic lines at Shake Shack at 20th and Sansom and determined how long you’ll have to wait at each of several waypoints. Welcome to a more efficient lunch hour.

We ate here on Sunday for the first time and there was a minimal wait. The hamburgers though on the small side are much better than Five Guys, as is the service. We had our 2 year old son and our big dog with us – a Shake Shack employee immediately came outside offering to help us with pulling an extra table over, offered and brought a cup of water for the our dog. He and another co-worker at various times checked back to see if we needed anything and even brought us additional water for my wife and I and our dog. Five Guys service although minimally pleasant – doesn’t come close.

This place is extremely over rated. I’ll agree that the service is good but it doesn’t outweigh the bland food. I’ve tried it twice and that is going to be it for me.

Not worth the wait. Real NY’ers laugh at this shit. I don’t wait in line for food that’s merely above average, and that’s as high as a fast food burger gets – above average. I’ll wait for Capogiro, Village Whiskey, or a table at Alla Spina. I do not wait for fast food. It’s unbecoming.

Unsure why anyone would wait to eat here. Having eaten a cheeseburger and fries, I was completely underwhelmed. Burger was no better than Five Guys and the fries weren’t even close. I’d eat there again, but it won’t be at my request.

      The hot dog is good.

The question is whether this place will have the same allure a couple of years from now.

So everyone’s pretty much annoyed at the long lines at Shake Shack? Here’s a real quick way to drop the wait time: The better burger, fries, and ENTIRE package is across the street at Village Whiskey…. just saying!

    • Dustin

I agree Spark. I have no problem spending three times as much for something ten times better.

I agree about Village Whiskey.. but there is no guarantee you will not have to wait at VW, especially in the winter. That restaurant is the size of a postage stamp..

The custard is fantastic. The good thing is that there is never a wait for the custard. I love the burger and fries, but they charge a lot and even the soda is on the small side. I miss Goodburger, but I guess that was too healthy for Philly.
