Urban Enoteca Compared to a Dead Fish

Brian Freedman does not enjoy his wine or dinner at the Latham Hotel’s new Urban Enoteca. And that’s putting it mildly.

Worst of all was the “rustic stew of coastal shellfish.” It arrived practically trailing cartoon odor-lines, like those wisps of smoke that followed Pepe LePew in the old Warner Bros. classics. Bland halibut, well-cooked but virtually flavorless shrimp, “Maine lobster” that was little more that the occasional shoestring of flaccid meat—all that and more came to the table in a menacing bath of unexpectedly thick tomato sauce squiggled with a Day-Glo saffron rouille whose sourness was cause for concern.

      @Lord Chesterfield: That’s hysterical. Two of my favorite quotes:

      “At Urban Enoteca, we strive for the top quality and in doing so we have created the best Philly restaurant.”

      I had no idea what I’ve been missing!

      “When picking out the best restaurants in Philly, you have to first consider the wine list. Urban Enoteca has well over 50 options, but we have created a twist on how to select your wine. Rather than list them by region or grape, we have created characters for the wine so that you as the customer can better choose your wine.”

      I’ve never seen that before!

      The bar for being a food critic is too low in Philadelphia. Between Tray Poops and Brain Friedman, I don’t know who is the less talented writer. I prefer more professionalism in a review and less ranting and pop culture references.

      The only “food critic” in Philadelphia is Craig LaBan. The rest are nothing more than bloggers with bigger platforms.
