Brauhaus Schmitz owner Doug Hager wants to do for German beer for Philadelphia what Tom Peters of Monk’s Cafe has done for Belgian beer. A lofty goal for sure, but in recent months he has brought some remarkable beers to Philadelphia and he’s not letting up. Tonight he is tapping some of the most celebrated beers from Passau, Germany for the first time in the Philadelphia region.

The eight beers come from three breweries located in the Southern Bavarian town; the oldest of which, Hacklberg Brauerei has been brewing since 1618.

The beers will be available through Sunday and can be paired with a special tasting menu from chef Jeremy Nolen.

Hacklberg Brauerei- Brewing since 1618 Passau, Germany

• Humorator-7.0% Am aromatic doppelback, dark, malty, and strong, yet well balanced and easy to drink.
• Zwickel – 4.9% unfiltered amber lager beer, light hop bitterness and full bodied taste
• Dultfestbier – 5.5% brewed especially for festivals, a full bodied festbier with a malty kick.

Innstadt Brauerei – Brewing since 1318 Passau, Germany

• Stadlbier: 5.4% equivalent to an Oktoberfest beer for Bavaria, golden color, rich and malty
• Extra Schwarze- 5.1 % Medium to full bodied, lots of dark malts with a touch of bitter chocolate and coffee
• Neues Helles – 5.0% Golden Lager with rich malt flavor. The Bavarian Benchmark.

• Weizen- 4.8%
• Weizenbock- 6.8%
