Aargh, Rum Bar Is Closing

Posted by Foobooz on September 24th, 2012

Today owner Adam Kanter has announced that his Rum Bar will be closing after business on Saturday, September 29th as the bar has lost its lease after five-and-a-half years in business.

Kanter says “thank you all for this wonderful ride. I look forward to my next venture whatever that may be. I am forever in the Rum industry and will be back one way or another. On to the next chapter!”

The food there was terrible the only time my gf and I went.

I never went for the food so I can’t comment there but the drinks were AMAZING! Sad that they’re closing.

This place will be missed! One of the best Rum bars you will find anywhere, incredible selection, solid food, friendly staff and a hands-on owner who’s passionate about rum. Cant wait for Adam’s next Rum-venture…he is among the most knowedgable and respected people in the Rum Industry.

What happens if I have a gift certificate to here? Anyone know how that typically works??

Alison, you have till September 29th, I’d suggest you get in soon.

I took some friends there for the ‘pop-up’ Duke’s Surf Bar, with Kathy Loeb herself bartending the Tiki Bar themed rum drinks. They enjoyed it alot. The food always Looked good when I was there [but never ate], but the drinks always Tasted good [always drank] the several times I was there. Gotta admit, that part of town [Midtown?] is a bit of a destination. I remember Monkey Bar was out there, and Bards, Irish Pub, Jolly’s, Medusa bar, Roosevelt’s..all on my way to Wonderland…HEY Now!

Oh noes! Where will I get my Barrilito!

Alison, this depends on the Gift Certificate. If you purchased it at Rum Bar, you will have until Saturday to redeem it. If you purchased it through Restaurant.com, Living Social, or Google; you can contact them for a refund.

This is really sad. They had the best rum selection of, well, anywhere I can think of, and they made great cocktails. And they’re great people, to boot. *sigh*

Here’s hoping they open another great establishment soon. In the meantime, thanks for a great time!

Considering by the staff notification on Saturday and the fact that there were times that that staff didn’t get paid it sounds like the reason the lease isn’t renewed is because rent wasn’t getting paid. If this is the case shame on you Adam. That affects a lot of peoples lives especially in this time in this economy. I have been in the industry 20 years and still took me two years to find a job I am happy and satisfied with

      Thatguy,
I’m not sure where you heard the staff wasn’t getting paid. I have always been current with my staff. Rent was always paid, sometimes late, but always paid. Yes, I only gave my staff 8 days notice of us closing… I wish I could have given them more, but I only made the final decision to stop attempting to get a lease renewal a week earlier. I was in no position to tell them at that juncture.

Closing a bar is never easy to do. You have been in the industry 20 years, but have you ever had ownership in a business? If you have, you would know that closing your bar, that is all your dreams and aspirations wrapped in one, is not an easy challenge.

Shame on me? My current staff has been here an average of 3 years, and I only have 10 employees. If they were so caught up on pay, they would have left years ago.

I don’t get offended easily, but I took exception to your comment. I am proud in what Vena, Angel, Lee, Katie, Joe, and the rest of my current and former staff was able to help me accomplish.

Now that I’ve defended myself, be sure to come have a drink Saturday night and celebrate our run.

      Thank you.

      Adam,

Have you considered trying a rum bar in another neighborhood… maybe one of Philly’s less established corners? i.e. to take advantage of cheaper rents and an “authentic” setting as a canvas for a creative, edgier bar.

Something like Nights and Weekends? Philly definitely needs a good rum bar

Well Said Adam. You did not lower yourself to the level of the simpletons who critize. They can’t even keep a job six months yet feel entitled to critize an owner. Hope you made him scrub toilets while he was a slacker working for you.

Adam. Is my rum plaque available for purchase or barter?
