Garces Family Foundation Fundraiser Happening Next Week

A few weeks back, we let all you charity-minded gastronauts know about the upcoming launch of the Garces Family Foundation and the big party that they were throwing to introduce themselves to the community. And now that the party is coming right up (it’s on October 10 at the Kimmel Center), we’ve decided it’s time to remind you again.

In case you’ve forgotten, the Garces Family Foundation is a charity founded by our own Iron Chef, Jose Garces, and his wife, Dr. Beatriz Garces, which will serve to help Philly’s growing immigrant population through after-school programs, community outreach, tutoring and medical care through a partnership with Puentes De Salud. All that stuff, though? That’s gonna cost some serious green. Which, of course, is where you come in.

As a first fundraiser, the party that’s happening on October 10 is a killer. There will be hordes of big name chefs, lots of food, plenty of booze and a beautiful location–no matter whether you’re coming in for the General Admission price ($200) or springing for one of the newly-released VIP tickets, priced at $1,000 a head, but worth it if you’ve got that kind of scratch to throw around. The VIP dinner, which starts at 6:00 and is being held upstairs in the Kimmel Center’s new rooftop garden, is a 5-course dinner (plus paired wines) being assembled by an all-star team. Garces himself has the first course, doing a wagyu beef hot pot with matsutake mushrooms, poached egg and black truffle consomme. Marc Vetri and Brad Spence have the second course (stuffed squid ink paccheri with ricotta, red chile flakes and seppia ragu). Michael Solomonov has the third, whipping up a quick little halibut in brik with artichoke, tomato and black harissa, and Pierre Calmels from Bibou will be following that with venison pithiviers (which are basically, deer pies–only WAY more delicious than that might sound to you). Kevin Sbraga will then sweep in and handle dessert, slinging pineapple upside-down cake with coconut sorbet and a pomegranate-thyme gelee.

Nice, right? And yeah, it’s a grand a head, but when else are you going to get the chance to rub shoulders with all the swells in town and hang out with five of the city’s best chefs all in one place?

And just in case that’s not enough, there’ll also be hors d’oeuvres. And the hors d’oeuvres will be handled by the likes of Tim Spinner (La Calaca Feliz)  Jonathan Adams (Pub & Kitchen), Michael Schulson (Sampan) and Joey Baldino (Zeppoli). That’s a solid team if ever there was one.

The general admission portion of the party kicks off at 7:30 and will feature a somewhat more restrained lineup. I mean, if you call Mike Stollenwork from Fish, Han Chiang from Han Dynasty, Kanella’s Konstantinos Pitsillides, David Gilberg and Carla Goncalves from Koo Zee Doo, Tashan’s Sylva Senat and Hiroyuki “Zama” Tanaka from Zama “restrained.”

What’s more, every single one of Jose Garces’s Philly operations will be represented on the main floor during the GA festivities, which adds another 8 chefs to the mix. And all for $200.
