So perhaps you’ve heard the news that we have a bit of rain headed our way…
Hurricane Sandy is currently bearing down on Philly (and elsewhere) and what with all the cancellations, states of emergency and dire warnings of impending doom, we’re guessing that a lot of you are taking a grown-up snow day today. Which is awesome, of course, but can get a little bit dull if you find yourselves stuck inside all day (or week) with nothing to do.
But do you know what makes sitting inside all day a lot more amusing? Alcohol! So what we have for you this morning are a bunch of hurricane-themed cocktails with which to liven up your day as you wait for the world to end.
Oh, and for those of you who haven’t been paying attention to our #OpeninPHL tag on twitter, it looks like all state liquor stores are CLOSED for the storm. But being good Fooboozers, we’re guessing you prepared by stocking your liquor cabinets well in advance.
Gotta start off with a classic…
2 oz light rum
2 oz dark rum
2 oz passionfruit juice, if you can get it. A little extra grenadine if you can’t
1 oz orange juice
Juice of a half a lime
1 Tbsp simple syrup
1 Tbsp grenadine
Fancy-pantsy fruit garnish, plus an umbrella
Ice in your shaker, squeeze a lime in your shaker, pour everything else in your shaker, then shake vigorously and strain into a hurricane glass. If you’re feeling super-awesome, you can try to make this by floating in an ingredient at a time, but really Mr. Cocktail Guy? Who are you trying to impress.
One of the most memorable cocktails I’ve had in the past couple years was a half-dozen Dark and Stormies mixed by David Katz and his Meme crew at last year’s Feastival. Perfect for any occasion.
Dead cinch: 2 oz Gosling’s Black Seal rum, 3 oz of the best (preferably Jamaican) ginger beer you can find and a lime wedge for garnish. Also, an umbrella.
Ice in a highball glass, booze over the ice, ginger beer over the booze, lime wedge on top. Done.
Not my favorite cocktail, but folks seem to like it. And remember: during natural disasters, all normal drinking rules are suspended, so if you’ve always wanted to try a mudslide but have always been a little embarassed to order one in a bar, today’s your day.
1 oz vodka (use the cheap stuff, no one will know)
1 oz coffee liqueur (use the good stuff, it makes a difference)
1 oz Irish cream liqueur (Bailey’s–accept no substitute)
Fill a rocks glass with ice. Fill a shaker with ice. Pour booze into shaker. Shake that shaker. Strain deliciousness into glass. Garnish with chocolate syrup. And an umbrella.
For those calm moments between the rain bands.
1.5 oz vodka
4 oz grapefruit juice
1.5 oz cranberry juice
Chill a highball glass. Add vodka, then grapefruit juice, then top with cranberry juice. Garnish with a lime wedge. And an umbrella.
Little sister to the full-strength Hurricane. Make this one before the power goes out.
12 oz kiwi-strawberry fruit drink (what do you mean you don’t have any kiwi-strawberry juice around? Amateur…)
1 oz spiced rum
1 oz Bacardi limon
1 oz peach schnapps
Get out the blender. Add all ingredients, plus ice, then blend. Pour into frosted mugs or hurricane glasses, top with a lac of grenadine for color. Garnish with a fanned strawberry. And an umbrella.
The first and last word in disaster preparedness.
1 food editor
2 oz Jameson whiskey or Bulleit bourbon
Put 1 ice cube in a rocks glass. Add whiskey. Garnish with a little umbrella. Pour resultant mixture into food editor. Repeat as necessary for 24-48 hours.
