Philadelphia’s Top 50 Bars by the Numbers

We’ve posted the 2012 Best Bars in Philly list and now that we have had some time to let the list soak in, here are some interesting facts and figures about the Top Bars list.

  • 14 first time bars made the list.
  • Alla Spina had the highest ranked debut.
  • Welcome back to Doobies and McMenamin’s, neither had made the list since 2009.
  • Biggest jump, Frankford Hall jumped up from 41 to 10 in its first full year.
  • Farmers’ Cabinet saw the biggest drop falling from #9 to off the list.
  • Standard Tap, South Philadelphia Taproom and Pub on Passyunk East have been in the top 10 each year of the list.
  • Beer dominated the top ten spots but cocktails are a priority in at least seventeen of the establishments.

      This list is very disappointing. Quite a few of these places should not be considered bars. They are restaurants. I am surprised there was no love/respect for the industry!!

      I don’t understand the love for Standard Tap – North Third is better. No Eulogy? And Fairmount doesn’t exist. At least McGinchley’s didn’t make the list this year.

      What happened to Lemon Hill? One of the best new entrants in the craft cocktail arena didn’t even get a mention? They have Fernet Branca on tap, for crying out loud!

      How about Woody’s… They are like the 5th biggest buyer from the LCB… and they are not on the list… I know it is a gay bar… but come on… Everyone is welcome there

      same for Tavern on Camac the Gay piano Bar… always busy

      Seriously, nothing in Fairmount exists? Lemon Hill, Bishops Collar, Bridgid’s, Rembrandt’s, or London? Teresa’s Next Door? It’s almost 20 miles outside of the city. Zahav? I mean I would never say “Hey lets go to Zahav and grab a drink.” I don’t think anyone would.

      Foobooz mentioned that their list was told through a certain lens. The Fairmount bars, which I love, may trend a little more on the yuppier side which could explain their exclusion.

      I go get drinks at Zahav often. Many do.

      Me too. And Percy street also. The first two places that pop in my head when I think bar

      I am highly disappointed! Hop Sing is by far the most sophisticated bar with the best cocktails in the city. It would figure a low class blue collar city like Philly would appreciate some of the cheap dirty beer joints on the list I would be embarrassed to be caught dead in!

      Who says Philly is a low class city? Who implies that blue collar means low class? I, an immigrant some years ago from the middle west, find Philadelphia a complex, interesting place, composed of many economic classes,and lots and lots of opinions. So have your opinions, of course, but please, everybody, Philadelphia is one of the great cities of the Western world. Always has been. Has its ups and downs, but so do Paris, Rome, Athens, etc etc.

      Fatherhood has taken its toll on me. I’ve never even heard of 1 Tippling Place.

      My heyday was back when everybody loved to hate on P&K.

      These are the same people who put farmer’s cabinet at #9 last year…

      …how did you feel about farmer’s cabinet felicia?

      How in the world did Farmer’s Cabinet fall off the list? Easily the best cocktails and beer selection in the city, crooked owner or not.
