Villanova Getting New Concept, Same Bad Feng Shui

Dana Smith Farrell, a partner in Harvest Seasonal Grill is bringing Avenue Kitchen to the former home of Maia and Mix in Villanova. Neither of those concepts was able to survive the awkward location hidden off of Lancaster Avenue. Farrell will be joined by her brother Greg Smith who will be the head chef. Smith has worked for the likes of George Perrier, Jean-Marie La Croix and Chris Scarduzio—after attending both the Art Institute of Philadelphia and the Culinary Institute of America.

The restaurant proposes to offer “commonly loved classics using the freshest, finest ingredients to present simple and approachable, modern American cooking.” The Main Line spot will also have a liquor license and will offer beer, wine and craft cocktails.

The industrial interior, designed by Sandvold Blanda Architecture + Interiors, will include Emeco chairs from recycled Coke bottles and reclaimed wood tabletops from Provenance Architectural.

Avenue Kitchen is aiming for a spring opening.

Something will eventually stick at that location…how many more horrible concepts could there be? What I don’t understand is why no one is aiming at the Villanova students? From a business standpoint it’s a captive audience. I realize a concept in that form wouldn’t warrant a mention form this illustrious ‘blog”…unless that is…they (the concept)…….anyway even though the property sits of Route 30, you’re 20 feet from I-476, a 1/10th of a mile from Villanova University and surrounded by one of the wealthiest demographic areas in North America.

They never should have knocked down the Villanova Skating Rink!

Fyn, I hope you’re talking about Radnor Rink, as opposed to Radnor Rolls! As a kid I used to ice skate and play hockey 3 or 4 times a weekend.

I used to work in this building. The company I worked for has since gone under, much like everything else in this building. Definitely cursed. Maia was dreadful with the exception of the coffee bar/party case, at which I spent way too much money almost every day. I think the high-end concepts were intended to cater to the local residents and the businesses nearby, but there aren’t enough businesses and the location is too far removed from the road to have enough visibility. It was a grocery store in the front for about 5 minutes when the building first opened back in 2006.

the new concept has a solid shot. the Feury brothers were pulling to much money out of it to survive.. I would go in there and they would have 20 employees working. labor killed them I’m sure.

The curse is obviously in the parking.
Beat the fear, make a reservation.
