Starr Goes For A Florida Threesome With The Bistro

So Jose Garces isn’t the only local guy making big, interstate moves this season…

Stephen Starr’s restaurant empire will expand again come December, 2013. Having just signed a seven-year contract with new Pérez Art Museum in Miami, Starr will now bring a third restaurant to Florida (he opened Steak 954 at the W Hotel Ft. Lauderdale in April 2009 and Makoto at the Bal Harbour Shops in March 2011) and be providing catering for all meetings or private events, from waterfront weddings to outdoor film screenings.

The restaurant, known as The Bistro at the Pérez Art Museum according to Simon Powles, President of STARR Restaurants Catering Group, will be only one part of a massive $220 million project in downtown Miami. The 200,000 sq ft, three-story venue will sit in the newly renamed Museum Park and offer museum-goers and diners alike a sweeping view of Biscayne Bay.

Seating approximately 70 inside and 30 outside under the museum’s canopy, The Bistro will focus on American fare “with some influences of local cuisine and culture,” according to Powles. Because the restaurant’s core hours are museum hours, the primary meal will be lunch, which will include salads, sandwiches, artisan pizzas, entrées and desserts.

Though other sources claim the menu will have direct influence from existing Starr menus, Powles states, “The bistro menu will not feature specific menu items from other STARR Restaurants, as we want to create a unique menu for the museum,” though special events menus will have Makoto sushi and cuisine concepts not unlike those at Buddakan. The Bistro is also open for Sunday brunch, which Powles seems particularly excited about, as it’s “a wonderful place to relax by the Bay and enjoy great art and cuisine.”
