Franzone’s may be the best pizza in the Philadelphia area that you have never heard of. It doesn’t have the name or pedigree of a Nomad or Osteria, but to those with a very specific taste for a very specific kind of pizza, it may be better than all of them. And at $9.50 for a small pie and $12 for a large plain, it is certainly the best value.
Franzone’s has been written up in a number of Philadelphia publications–raved about by those who’ve discovered it and fallen for its charms–but it still rarely sees anyone other than locals come through its doors. In some ways that’s a good thing. The place has character. The lack of notice keeps the place honest and local. After all, Franzone’s is a Bridgeport institution, and Bridgeport, as a closely knit working-class community, has Franzone’s as its center.

All you need is a dollar, and West Philadelphia will be your oyster.
The Baltimore Avenue Dollar Stroll is back, and it’s taken some steroids. For two warm, summer nights, the first on June 13th, and the second on September 12th, from 5:30-8:30 pm, West Philly shops, bars, and restaurants will be doling out specialty items for just a buck.
That’s not nearly it, though:
There will be food trucks, face painting, balloon artists, giveaways, those darling public pianos, live music by The Fleeting Ends, street performers, fire artists, and more. It’s a guaranteed good time. The list of those involved after the jump.

Brian Freedman extols the virtues of Fitler Dining Room, the most recent occupant of the charmed space that is the northwest corner of 22nd and Spruce.
For the short period of time that Fitler has been open, its food is remarkably confident: The distance between the intent of each dish and its execution is virtually nonexistent. And the way it straddles the line between higher-concept and comfort is something that many restaurants far further along in their evolution still struggle to achieve. Tagliatelle, hand-cut and tender, arrives all tangled around nettles, spring peas and ramps. Smoked chèvre melts when the hen egg nesting in the center of it all is broken and mixed into the noodles, creating a deeply flavorful sauce and providing a perfect framing mechanism for those bright spring flavors. Braised beef cheek arrived all shimmering black like some sort of lacquered jewelry box. For a chilly, early spring evening, it was perfect.

Harvest Seasonal Grill, under construction in Montgomveryville
Dave Magrogan is expanding his restaurant empire. Already 14 restaurants strong, Magrogan is hiring managing partners, general managers, executive chefs and sous chefs for three restaurants he is planning on opening before the end of the year. Another Harvest Seasonal Grill is scheduled to open in Montgomeryville in August. A fifth Doc Magrogran’s (location unannounced) is in the works and Magrogan is promising a new concept to open in Center City. No word on what that concept will be, other than it will not be a 1920s diner.
If you’re interested in any of the open positons with the Dave Magrogan Group, email resumes to dmg@davemagrogangroup.com.

Tiffin Bistro is set to open on Sunday, June 2 for dinner (ribbon cutting is set for Friday, May 31) at 11th and Federal. The newest restaurant in Munish Narula‘s growing Indian food empire that already boasts the upscale Tashan and half a dozen delivery-focussed Tiffin shps, Tiffin Bistro will have a more upscale feel than Tiffin without the big night out feel of Tashan. We’re betting Tiffin Bistro becomes a neighborhood hotspot for in no time.
Check out a Foobooz post from early April with more details on the soon-to-be-opened restaurant.
