Sausage Hombre hits the streets today.

Chef Guillermo Tellez’s sausage cart made its debut today, hitting the streets at 5th and Chestnut about an hour and a half ago. He’s grilling up 5 varieties of his housemade sausage and selling them for $6 apiece (bottle of water included). So for those of you willing to brave the clouds and the drizzle, get over there now. He’s only going to be working his corner until the sausages run out.

Roy Choi Is Cooking In Camden?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 23rd, 2013

RoyChoi

True, the weird, headless selfie ain’t much to look at. But it’s the tweet it’s attached to that made us sit up and take notice:

“Cooking in Camden then back to Philly love”

For those of you who don’t know, Roy Choi is the man behind L.A.’s slavishly adored Kogi Taco–a Korean taco food truck that people just go absolutely batshit over. (It was good enough that it snagged Choi a 2010 Best New Chef nod from Food & Wine magazine.) We don’t have any idea why (or where) he’s cooking in Camden, or what he’s doing in Philly (other than buying cheese), but until we hear otherwise, we’re just going to assume that he’s looking at bringing a new Kogi truck to town which will do nothing but follow Art and I all over the city every day.

First Bite: Luke’s Lobster

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 16th, 2013

LukesSign

The Thursday that sign is referring to is today. And noon was already two hours ago. So if you’re not at Luke’s Lobster right now, stuffing your face full of lobster rolls, what’s your excuse?

Mine is that I dropped in last night on the soft open/preview and that I’m still kinda stuffed–mostly because, at a certain point, I just gave up on the dining room and started hanging out by the pass rail of the open kitchen, grabbing half-rolls off the trays as fast as the cooks could lay them down. Waiting my proper turn? That’s for suckers. Especially when I’ve already been waiting so long for a lobster roll done right and served for a price that doesn’t immediately put it in the realm of the only-if-someone-else-is-paying expense account lunch.

Hey, You Wanna See What Hundreds Of People Eating Free Chocolate Looks Like?

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 15th, 2013

DSC01851

It looks a lot like this–on a perfectly warm and sunny day in Rittenhouse Square, for the first of our Best Of Philly public tastings.

We had several hundred people show up. The line stretched long but moved fast. And while we obviously can’t tell you yet who the people picked as the winner (you’ll have to wait for August’s Best of Philly issue for the final reveal), I can say that I snuck a look inside the bag full of completed ballots and saw votes for all five nominated chocolatiers–Eclat Chocolate, Chocolates By Mueller, Marcie Blaine Artisinal Chocolates, Lore’s Chocolates and Shane Confectionery–who made the trek today.

For those of you who couldn’t make it–or who didn’t heed our warnings and showed up a little too late–we have the next best thing to eating chocolate: Pictures of chocolate. Check out the photo spread after the jump.

Xi’an Famous Food, Now Open In Chinatown

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 15th, 2013

Over at Midtown Lunch, they’re all twitterpated (and with good reason) over the recent opening of Xi’an Famous Food at 902 Arch Street in Chinatown, in the former home of Szechuan Tasty House–which was a pretty good restaurant, but with an awesome name.

Before you Manhattan day-trippers get too excited, this Xi’an Famous apparently has nothing to do with the beloved mini-chain of the same name out of New York. But for those of you aching for a taste of Xi’an (one of the ancient cities of China, and one with its own unique cuisine), that probably won’t matter at all.

Free stuff alert!

In about a half hour, we’ll be down in Rittenhouse Square giving away free chocolate as part of our first Best of Philly 2013 Public Tasting. It starts at noon and will go until all the chocolate is gone. All you need to do is vote on who you think is best.

Citron & Rose Moves Forward

Posted by Jason Sheehan on May 14th, 2013

citron-rose

The last time we heard anything from Citron & Rose–the kosher restaurant opened in Merion by David Magerman, Michael Solomonov and Steve Cook–it was that Cook, Solo and their chef, Yehuda Sichel were leaving. It was a weird moment and no one really seemed to know what to make of the sudden rupturing of the partnership that had brought to the Main Line one of the most interesting restaurants it’d seen in years.

But now there’s new news from C&R, and it’s pretty big.
