Bourbon, Barrels and Bugs At Iron Hill This Weekend

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 28th, 2013

Ew, bugs in my beer? Why would I want to put bugs in my beer? I nearly had to be resuscitated when I choked down a dried fly during last year’s Philly Science Festival. But I trust Iron Hill Maple Shade‘s head brewer Chris LaPierre, so … I guess he knows what he’s doing?

Fine Dining In Camden (Okay, Sicklerville) For $25 At The Back Door Cafe

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 27th, 2013

What to do when you’re craving an inexpensive fine-dining experience and it’s that rare night when no one’s hosting a restaurant week? Hit up a culinary school and try your luck with the students. At this point, you’re probably familiar enough with the program at the Restaurant School at Walnut Hill College. Now, though, there’s a new kid at the stoves. Every Thursday night from now until May 30, Camden County College students operate the Back Door Café where, under low chandelier lighting, you can have a white-linen meal for $25.

A Collaboration Dinner For The Ages

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 22nd, 2013

artintheagebottles

Art in the Age is all about collaboration this month. First, it was the First Friday Prohibition affair with the Constitution Center and now it’s a four-course pairing dinner tonight at Lotus Farm to Table in Media. In addition to serving cocktails made from Art in the Age’s old-timey Sage, Rhuby, Snap and Root, chef Ryan Sulikowski is putting together some pretty impressive sounding dishes–some of which include said spirits.

To wit: course #1 is Sage-roasted apple, braised cabbage, juniper and smoked basil bread, paired with sage gin, apple cinnamon syrup, burnt rosemary and soda water. And dessert is Root chocolate chip cookie, vanilla olive oil ice cream and candied rutabaga paired with Root, vanilla cream and shaved chocolate. Sounds like one for the ages, huh? Tickets are $55 per person.

Guy’s Night At The Philadelphia Home Show

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 4th, 2013

Guys, are you tired of your wives dragging you to the Philadelphia Home Show year after year, begging you to buy an all-in-one bathtub or new flower pots for your entryway? If so, you’re probably not the only one–though we acknowledge that there’s just as much cool so-called “man” stuff to interest the testosterone set. Still, there is that feeling that the Home Show is altogether too much about curtains and drawer pulls, but this year the Home Show (which runs through Sunday at the Philadelphia Convention Center) has something that no guy can resist: A guy’s night.

A Healthy Super Bowl Party? Who Wants That?

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 1st, 2013

F3

Lord, the health nuts couldn’t leave it at the door, could they? Now they’re infiltrating our Super Bowl parties – the one night a year we actually get a good excuse to stuff ourselves with wings, nachos, chili and anything else gluttonous within arm’s reach (okay, make that two nights if you count NYE … well, maybe three if you throw in Halloween). ANYHOO, Sunday’s party at good old South Philadelphia Bar & Grill is … get this … not just geared toward the ladies but actually featuring healthy food and drinks.

Ew, like ladies watch football.

Tonight: Art In The Age Of Prohibition Reception

Posted by Tara Nurin on February 1st, 2013

ArtInTheAgeofProhibition

To kick off its Prohibition-themed art and ephemera exhibition, Art in the Age of Mechanical Reproduction is partnering with the National Constitution Center to host a flapper-icious First Friday fete this evening from 6-8pm. Throughout the month, the edgy-yet-retro clothing and gift apothecary/boutique will display graphic illustrations that depict famous Philly Prohibition characters by local artist Hank Krall, as well as artifacts from the era. It’s Called “Art in the Age of Prohibition.” Get it?

Through the exhibition’s run, the store will also program lectures and workshops on homebrewing, Prohibition cocktails and spirits production. As for tonight, we couldn’t get any confirmation on the drink list, but every time we’ve been to an Art in the Age reception, there’s been a bartender mixing esoteric concoctions with the company’s three historically-inspired liquor brands: Root, Snap and Rhuby. We’re guessing that, tonight, they’ll probably be adding Sage to the mix(ers) as well.

Returning To Our Hunter/Gatherer Roots At The Farm And Fisherman

Posted by Tara Nurin on December 18th, 2012

How does that expression go: “Feed a man a pig and he eats for a night; teach a man to butcher that pig then cook every bit including the squeal and he eats like Philadelphia chef Josh Lawler?” Or something like that.

Lawler is teaching us carnivores to cook like he does at his nationally acclaimed mud-to-table BYO, The Farm and Fisherman, with a series of three individual Sunday classes on butchery starting in January. As if it weren’t enough to be forced to confront innards on seemingly every modern menu, now we’re being asked to partake in cutting them out of Wilbur’s flesh.

Agricola Set To Open In Princeton On February 1

Posted by Tara Nurin on December 14th, 2012

The highly anticipated Agricola restaurant in Princeton will open around February 1 with the kitchen under the command of executive chef Josh Thomsen, the French Laundry alum and StarChef “Rising Star Chef” who opened Tao in Las Vegas and ran it as the highest-grossing restaurant in the country. Thomsen will be preparing foods sourced at his co-owner’s nearby farm, as well as other farms in the area.

UPDATED: Checking In On The Redesign At Jake’s And Cooper’s Wine Bar

Posted by Tara Nurin on December 4th, 2012

Free lot parking in Manayunk may just be reason enough to venture out to the newly reconstituted Jake’s and Cooper’s Wine Bar, though diners who’ve patronized Bruce Cooper’s award-winning Main Street spot for the past 25 years will probably want to check out the latest reconceptualization that has the Jake’s side of the operation finally eliminating most traces of its fine-dining history in order to meet 21st century Philadelphia where it’s at today.

Old Swanky Bubbles Goes British With The Victoria Freehouse

Posted by Tara Nurin on December 4th, 2012

When it opens next spring in the club formerly known as Swanky Bubbles, The Victoria Freehouse will add an old-school European vibe to Old City with classic British cocktails (shaken, not stirred, we presume) and a beer lineup consisting exclusively of English and English-style draughts–which, coincidentally, are not traditionally very bubbly.

The UK-themed restaurant is being opened by the Brit and the Yankee step-son who operate The British Chip Shop in Haddonfield. The menu’s not posted yet but the pair is billing the Freehouse as an authentic restaurant and bar, and their nascent website shows pics of fried green beans and curried coconut mussels. We take this as an indication that owners are allowing some colonial influences to seep into their offerings–happy news for those diners who prefer options beyond break-your-teeth scones and mushy toad-in-the-hole.

Entrees will range from $10-$30, dress is casual, and if any of the servers act snooty, go ahead and make fun of their teeth.
